Overpopulation is America’s Biggest Problem

An atheist’s view by Tom Rasmussen:

The USA is the greatest country in the world, but we have some serious problems…really serious problems. Consider the following:

  • $14 trillion in federal debt
  • Real unemployment of 21+ million
  • Underemployment of 26+ million
  • 50 million without health insurance
  • 120 million without dental insurance
  • 48 million receiving food stamps
  • Inflation in the cost of basic needs-food, energy and health care
  • Schools are turning out morons
  • Continued loss of manufacturing capacity to foreign companies
  • Two foreign wars, one the longest in US history(Afghanistan)
  • Porous borders

This list could go on and on but these are biggies. Most Americans will agree that these are the major problems but there is little agreement as to the causes and solutions. That’s because the root causes of the problems are not openly and truthfully discussed. Too many people have their minds in the past and a distorted view of reality caused by religion and stupidity. The politicians have sound bites but no answers.

The largest direct cause of the above problems is overpopulation from both over breeding and excessive immigration. The economy and the societal infrastructure cannot keep up with the endless flow of new people, especially during a severe recession. Until these causes are addressed, the problems will continue to get worse. Most of the population growth comes from minorities at the lower end of the economic spectrum. This is not a statement of racism but one of statistics. Of course, whites and Asians are quite capable of over breeding as well. Just look at all the dumb rednecks there out there…many with an oversupply of dumb redneck kids.

But nobody will talk about it—except it is a component in the undertone contained in the Tea Party rhetoric. Like Dr. Phil says: “You can’t fix what you don’t acknowledge.”

Population control needs to become a major part of our national dialogue. If we stuck to the principle of zero population growth (two children per couple), these problems would lesson over time. It should be a major goal of American society. Otherwise, we will evolve into a third-world country.

We also need to have a sincere national discussion as to who we really are as a people. Let’s answer the question: “To what extent are we our brother’s keeper?”  What are the precise rolls of government versus the private sector? Maybe we are too divided to form a national consensus but can’t we at least talk about it straight on? “Go forth and multiply” is a medieval principle that needs to be revised for modern reality. Of course, almost all religious teachings are medieval.

This discussion would put the Christian-right in a very uncomfortable spotlight. While they claim to be Christians, they believe in “every man for himself” which is totally contrary to the (supposed) teachings of Jesus Christ. The liberal-left believes the government should provide for all regardless of the circumstances which too is impractical. Nevertheless, most of the real humans contained in the above statistics or affected by the problems don’t want to be there. They want jobs and the ability to be self sufficient not the victims the Right blames for the statistics.

In 1970, author Alvin Toffler wrote a book named “Future Shock” which he defined as “too much change in too short a period of time”. He had no clue as to the magnitude of what he was projecting. In fact, Toffler coined the term “information overload”—this was before personal computers, fax machines, cell phones, CDs, HVDs, the internet, digital cameras, Fox News and MTV.

Well folks, we as a society are so deep in future shock that we are becoming unable to function. This is probably why people, in today’s modern world, are turning to religion…they are just plain scared. So let’s address the real problems, their causes and their solutions.

Florida Violates the US Constitution

By Tom Rasmussen

This morning I watched the inauguration of Florida’s new governor, Republican Rick Scott. I’ve lived in Florida for 35 years but this was the first time I ever watched this ceremony and I was appalled. It started with an opening prayer by a Catholic priest. Then various state officials were given the oath of office while placing their left hand on a Bible. The oath included a pledge to uphold and defend both the US and Florida constitutions. It ended with the caveat “so help me god”.  By then, my blood pressure was way up.

The ceremony went on with speeches that included the call for god’s help in solving all the state’s problems. It ended with another prayer by a Protestant, Christian minister invoking the name of father, son and holy ghost, a reference to the Christian religion. After watching all of this, I was incredulous. This state ceremony clearly did not honor the doctrine of the separation of church and state or defend the US Constitution. If fact, it blatantly shit on it.

Not only did it shit on the separation, it shit on all non-Christian religions as well. Many will tell me to “get over it as the majority rules”. But that is not constitutional. Contrary to what Bishop Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin say, our Founding Fathers went to great lengths to protect the rights of the minority and the separation of church and state. This is well supported by the facts.

The inaugural ceremony itself is no big deal but it’s the symbolism of a philosophy that really bothers me. Florida is in the deep South and is a very conservative state. Republicans control the State legislature so, along with the Republican governor, they run the show and that scares the shit out of me. Last year the Republican-controlled legislature passed a bill that would require that a woman seeking an abortion undergo a painful, invasive vaginal ultrasound before a doctor could perform the procedure. The bill was sponsored by a Bible-thumping zealot but fortunately was vetoed by then governor, Charlie Christ. Will it now be brought back?

I will quickly admit that I have Religion-phobia, especially Christian-phobia. I think Christians are blatantly evil and hypocritical. Of course they quickly accuse any non-believer or skeptic as evil. I believe in everyone’s right to believe as they choose but it should be kept out of government. And the religious need to curb their arrogance and quit pushing their religion on others. Keep your religion in your homes and your churches!

Most Christians are ignorant of history and the various periods of religious oppression where human rights were trampled. They would be happy to turn America into a theocracy which is one thing our Founding Fathers sought to protect us from. Atheists and patriotic Americans need to fight to save our freedoms from religious zealots before it’s too late. If the zealots succeed, I will be first to join an armed insurrection to restore the Constitution.

Florida residents need to watch their state government before we lose all of our civil rights. I wish someone would sue the State of Florida to secularize the inauguration and other state ceremonies…but it probably won’t happen.

2011 The Year of the Atheist

By Tom Rasmussen

2011 is finally here and I feel optimistic it will be a good year. Religion in America will continue to decline, especially among the young. This warms my heart and gives me hope. Although, I still am incredulous that in this modern age of logic, science and reason, there are so many who believe in the religious dogma of fairytales and fiction. I just don’t get it. People who otherwise appear intelligent, blindly follow stories created by man without any credible evidence…they deeply believe pure nonsense without question. But there is good news, atheism is a growing trend.

2011 will bring us the season of political folly of those running for the 2012 Republican nomination for president. Most of these candidates will be from the Christian-right so we will hear a lot of bible thumping and outlandish claims that our Founding Fathers intended America to be a Christian nation. Bishop Glenn Beck will be at the forefront of the religious sound bites asking us to fall to our knees and pray for god to fix our country’s problems. It won’t work, Glenn, we need concrete actions.

Unfortunately, American is becoming a second-class country full of stupid people following the herd mentality. There were recent comparisons of American youth’s scholastic achievements as compared to other countries and the results were abysmal. I blame this on religion. Too many stupid people are breeding stupid kids that they are not equipped to properly raise. Because of religion, there is not adequate birth control and sex education available. There should be free government supplied sterilization, contraception and abortion along with a major campaign to promote zero population growth.

Instead, we have to be politically correct so we overburden our education system with kids who were not properly nurtured by their stupid parents. Kids who are tainted by religion thus the cycle continues as religion is learned, it is not a natural instinct. There is a proven, direct correlation between intelligence and atheism. The more intelligent tend to be more likely to disbelieve the religious dogma. Remember, atheism is not a religion; it is the lack of religions belief.

As I have said before, atheists are not generally evil people. We don’t believe in Satan either so we can’t be working for him. We think religion is nonsense and that god is a creation of man. Some of us are classified as “secular humanists” in that we also believe that man is basically capable of good and ethical behavior without the need for religion. We think that religion is the basis of intolerance, hate and most wars.

Hopefully 2011 with bring a big increase in atheism which will make the world a better place.

Do Atheists Celebrate Christmas?

As an atheist or more exactly a secular humanist, I’m not totally sure how I feel about Christmas. I enjoy the festive nature of the holidays but I obviously don’t care for the religious aspects. I’ve studied the history of Christmas and I know how it evolved. But most people don’t. They just accept that it is Jesus Christ’s birthday. In truth, it isn’t. That is if Jesus ever existed.

Christmas evolved over many centuries starting as a celebration of the Winter solstice in the Nordic areas. An evergreen was brought into the home to provide greenery during the harsh winters. A large log called a “Yule” was burned while my pagan ancestors ate and drank to excess over several days as they celebrated the onset of winter.

Over hundreds of years, the celebration of the solstice evolved in Rome where the birthday of one of their mythological goddesses was celebrated on December 25th. This occurred during a multi-week drunken festival. In 400 AD, the church decided it needed in on the action so it “proclaimed” this to be Christ’s birthday.

These winter festivals went on for centuries and in the 1600s, the Puritans in England named it “Christmas” in their attempts to dampen the drunken revelry of the solstice celebration. They eventually outlawed most aspects of the festival.

Christmas wasn’t practiced in early America but started to evolve in the 1800s from various sources. It wasn’t declared a federal holiday until 1870. Writings from authors such as Washington Irving, Charles Dickens and Clement Clark Moore contributed to our modern version of Christmas that has evolved today.

Christmas has become both a secular and religious holiday with a lot of commercialization. What annoys me is we start seeing Christmas displays in stores before Halloween and they start playing the ad nauseam seasonal music in November. Shopping is good for the economy but it doesn’t need to start this early. I find this early bombardment disturbing especially at the grocery store…I can’t be festive and jolly when I keep seeing the constant price increases.

Many atheists celebrate Christmas as a time to exchange gifts, party, eat and spend time with family without any religious observance. It can be done. But others abhor the season. I personally think that Christmas is like Halloween in that it exists primarily for kids. Many adults find the whole experience very stressful. The pressure to find the right gift for someone that is affordable can be trying.

Christmas brings images of pine trees and snow that we don’t get here in Florida. Singing “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas” seems kind of foolish…snow is the last thing we want. Well that isn’t totally true, having Sarah Palin as president would be the last thing we want.

So remember, when you wish me “merry Christmas”‘ I’m going to take it as wishing me well for the Winter Solstice and you can take my response of “season’s greetings” as a secular equivalent.

Religion is Like Smoking

Religion is like smoking, it can make you feel good in the short run but it has a negative impact in the long run. Smoking ruins your physical health while religion ruins your mental health as well as your intellect. If you do both, that’s a double negative impact. Why didn’t most of the preachers of the 1950s and 1960s speak out against tobacco use? Some, like the Mormons, did but I never heard it when I was forced to attend church.

When I was a kid, most adults smoked. Smoking was glamorized on TV and in the movies. All of our heroes smoked. There were even TV ads for cigarettes. I remember arguing with my friends about whose father smoked the best brand. The nasty habit was implanted in our minds as the thing to do. As a result, many of us too smoked, starting in our teens. It was easy to do as there were unattended cigarette machines everywhere. Or we would steal them from our parents. Before long, we too were hooked.

Concurrently, we were being indoctrinated in religion. We were forced to attend church and Sunday school every week and we did it without question. Like smoking, it was the thing to do. I argued with my friends as to which denomination was the best. However, I did start to doubt the religious dogma at an early age and I made futile attempts to avoid church attendance. My mother would have none of it, I was going or else! Interestingly, my mother never smoked.

However, my father did smoke right up to the time he died of a stroke at age 56. The cigarettes killed him. But, he didn’t attend church; however, he always told me that I needed to go. I don’t know why as he was always stated that any con man, who was a good orator, could start a religion…right on the money.

As soon as I could, I stopped attending church but I smoked until age 51. By then we all knew better but it was difficult to quit. Smoking actually made me feel better and I enjoyed it even though it was a filthy, nasty habit. I encouraged my two kids not to smoke and, fortunately, one never did.

Today’s youth have mostly rejected smoking and they are turning away from religion as well. This is a very positive trend as people are getting smarter and believing science. Hopefully, over time both of these two nasty habits will disappear. Am I saying there is a direct correlation between smoking and religion? No, just they are like traits for weak-willed individuals.

We Need More Atheists in Public Office

I’ve had a case of writer’s block lately mainly out of frustration with our political and economic situation. I feel the need to take an antidepressant every time I go to the grocery store or a restaurant. Eating out is no longer fun once you see the menu prices…I dread the receipt of the check. I continuously look for a part-time job to supplement my meager pension with no results. There are few jobs and the wage scales have been depressed…a double whammy with the price increases.  All the while we are constantly fed bullshit as things don’t get better. Why aren’t the politicians complaining about the skyrocketing food prices? Is it because they are preoccupied with the sound volume of TV commercials? I bet they wouldn’t care if the sound got louder for one of their negative reelection ads.

The mid-term elections are fast approaching where we will be given the choice of Idiot A or Crook B. The country is fed up but there are no charismatic leaders with any solid ideas that can bring us together as Americans.  All we have are dimwits like Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich and Sharron Angle. On the left we have socialists who only believe in entitlements (social justice) and bigger government. On the other side, we have bible-thumpers who think god is going to fix our problems. But, these thumpers have no real compassion for their fellow man and they can spend public money just as well as the other side.

We are too busy casting blame and being politically correct to address the real issues and their causes. One of our biggest problems, besides uncontrolled greed, is overpopulation. Too many people are having too many babies that they and the social-economic systems cannot handle. Plus, there are too many immigrants. To what limits are we our brother’s keeper? Why don’t we debate that question directly? I guess it is because we were told to “go forth and multiply”.

Americans are very generous people, but we are becoming much divided on the issue of entitlements. Enough is enough! Are we required to transfer our wealth to places like India, Africa, Mexico and Haiti because these people don’t know when to stop breeding? We need to bring back some xenophobia and start making America and its citizens first. Let’s stop being the world’s policeman and turn more inward. We could sure use the $1 trillion that we have wasted on the Iraq war…not counting all of the human sacrifices.

Then we get useless debates on the extent of Obama’s Christianity. I personally hope that in reality he is an atheist. Then, he can make decisions based on logic and reason versus fairytales and nonsense. But as a politician, he has no choice but to pander to the herd mentality by pretending to be religious. His beliefs are more important to some than the real issues like the economy.

This country needs more atheists in public office who can deal with our problems without the religious baggage. Science, logic and reason would go farther than waiting for a non-existent supreme being to fix things. But, if religion wasn’t mentioned, could an atheist be elected? I think they could if they had good ideas and were charismatic. However, they would have to be a closet atheist which is a shame that in 2010 we are still dealing with medieval mythology.

Atheists Know More About Religion

The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life did a survey and found that atheists and agnostics knew more about religion than the religious themselves. That’s not a surprise to me. Dan Barker, co-president of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, probably knows more about religion and the Bible than the majority of theologians. Atheists are generally more intellectual than theists and, therefore, more apt to question the religious dogma. Many theists just blindly accept the religious doctrine they have been taught which may have coined the phrase “blind faith”. The more any reasonably intelligent person questions religion using science, logic and reason, the more likely they are to embrace atheism.

A study by the University of Minnesota found that most of the religious despise and distrust atheists more than any other minority including Muslims. Sounds real Christ-like doesn’t it? Maybe they are afraid because they can’t convince an atheist to believe using science, logic and reason as all they have is mythology and arguments created by their uninformed, huckster ministers. I’ve noticed that when people find out that I am an atheist, they tend to avoid me rather than engage me. Maybe they are afraid I will know more about their religion than they do.

This is why politicians and the powerful like religion. It makes the masses more malleable so they can be easily influenced and controlled.  This has been going on for centuries and it is alive and well today. The Republicans are trying to use religion as a basis to sell their positions even though they are opposite the supposed teachings of Jesus. Or should I say the teachings of the supposed Jesus? I’m not convinced he even existed.

Religion in politics is dangerous to our freedoms—which we are rapidly losing. It gives politicians what I call “detour” issues to divert attention away from serious problems, like unemployment, to emotional issues like abortion and mosques in New York City. Look at how many believe that Obama is a Muslim and all of the time spent on it instead of asking if he is a socialist who is intent on destroying the free enterprise system. And what about the disconnect between religion and the environment?

Today I listened to Bishop Glenn Beck. He didn’t mention god once during the whole show and I was shocked. He actual had an interesting discussion outlining the path for problem identification and recognition through fact, opinion, solutions and theory. I found it interesting that he doesn’t apply this logic to religion. Of course I think Beck was drawn to religion because of his alcoholism which is common for recovering alcoholics. I just get frustrated how he goes to great lengths to make a case for something then totally blows his credibility by saying god is the answer and that we should all fall to our knees and pray. However, Beck is very clever so this might just be his method of moving his malleable, religious listeners.

How to Annoy an Atheist

I receive email newsletters from both the left and the right sides of the political spectrum. One of the Christian-right rags sent me a page:

 ”How to Annoy an Atheist

“Dear Fellow Conservative,

Fed up with smug atheists claiming that the Bible is full of intolerance, hatred, and outlandish fables? Then you must get your hands on this free book. It’s the antidote against the secularist onslaught from mockers, skeptics and deniers.Engaging and well-researched, it sets the record straight with archaeological and historical evidence to prove that the Bible is true.”

The page went on to say that this miracle book would enable one to be prepared to debate an atheist. In other words, they had a new book of fairytales to explain an old book of fairytales. I could get the book free if I subscribed to their right-wing newspaper—which I’m not about to do.

As an atheist, this doesn’t annoy me; it cracks me up! These people are clueless but they will sell a lot of these books to even more clueless people…religious suckers. This book will not convince a single atheist to change their mind. A positive biopsy is the only thing that might and I mean might.

The religious do not understand that the burden of proof is on them, not the atheist. The atheist has nothing to debate. The atheist has not seen sufficient proof to convince them that god exists and cannot prove the negative. I can’t prove that Santa Claus doesn’t exist, but we know he does not. Another book will not provide sufficient proof.  Atheists want spectacular, overwhelming evidence…not what someone else tells us. I’d have to see something like the clouds parting in the night sky with a huge, thirty mile-wide face appear at about 5000 feet that creates the light of day and then tells me about god. Or, the Gulf of Mexico parted. Less than that, I’m not going to change my mind.

I’d love to see someone try to take on Dan Barker with this book.  He would make them look like the fools they are by using their own arguments.  Dan is co-president of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, the largest organization of atheists and agnostics. (A link to them is on my home page.) Dan was once an evangelical minister who one day realized that religion is bogus. His book “godless” could be considered the atheist’s bible…if we had one.

Anyway, we don’t annoy that easily. We tend to pity those who are religious, but we do get annoyed when they try to usurp the Constitution, claim the Founding Fathers wanted America to be a Christian nation or try to convert us. I think I will write a book on how to annoy a Christian. I wonder if that makes me a mocker, a skeptic or a denier. No, it makes me a freethinking, rational atheist.?

Crackpot Florida Preacher Puts Quran Burning on Hold

Rev. Terry Jones

Terry Jones, an evangelical crackpot preacher, finally cancelled his planned event to burn copies of the Quran on September 11th to protest the 2001 attacks. This asshole has a First Amendment right to do it but it would have been a grand display of very poor judgment, hatred and intolerance. Hopefully he was just looking for his “15 minutes” and will permanently cancel the event. After all, he did get President Obama to publically ask him not to do it plus a call from the Secretary of Defense. What more does he want? I guess it has to be more than 15 minutes.

Now even though I am an atheist, I don’t believe in “hate” crimes that this act could be considered. I don’t care for Muslims or the Quran but they have the right to practice their religion even though I think Islam is also a radical, totalitarian political ideology. The significant symbology of burning their sacred book is too intolerant for them to ignore. And, it would trigger more anti-American hatred and motivate more attacks on us and our troops…all for the edification of some stupid cracker’s attempt at fame.

This douche Jones is the latest poster boy for Christian hypocrisy and blatant stupidity. His actions are totally opposite the teachings of Jesus Christ which seems to be a trait common to most Christians…say one thing, do another. Plus any huckster, like Jones, can invent his own denomination of Christianity and make up his own creed. Then with a few lines of bullshit, get dumb asses to follow him. This time though, a small-time religious nut could trigger worldwide deaths and increased hatred. Maybe he doesn’t give a shit as long as he gets in front of the cameras…a loser’s fast-track to fame.

Now this lunatic is trying to inject himself into the New York mosque controversy which is a matter to be decided by the citizens of that great city. Who does this screwball think he is? His puny, Florida church has about 50 members who must be real simpletons to follow this jerk! He should be locked up for mental evaluation. Of course, so should most clerics.

If Jones should change his mind and go ahead with this idiotic plan, I’m going to burn a Bible and sent him the carcass to see how he likes his book of religious fiction being burned. If there are protests outside his church, I may drive to Gainesville and join in. Not that I have an affinity for Muslims, but I believe in their right to peacefully practice their religion and there is no need to spit in their faces even if we think they are mentally-deficient. To me, all religions are evil and the primary causes of war, hatred and intolerance. Jones is a moron who just doesn’t get it.

Missionaries at My Door

I can’t wait for the next set of Mormon missionaries or Jehovah’s Witnesses to come to my front door. Since they will be invading my space and privacy, I get to have some fun with them. They haven’t come in a long time so they are overdue. The last time the Jehovah’s people came, my wife let them in and I didn’t know it. I came walking out in my underwear which made the two young ladies quite nervous and they immediately left. I don’t think my wife will invite them in again.

Next time any of them come to my door I will be ready. After they make their initial pitch, I will tell them about my lord and savior, “Melvin” and the “First Church of Melvin”. I will tell them whatever I want and claim it came directly from Melvin through the “Book of Melvin”. I will tell them that the angel, Ralph in 1962, gave our leader, Bruce, a set of gold tablets which he translated into the book. I will further explain that Ralph took back the tablets when Bruce was finished with the book. I will then tell them what “Melvinism” will do to save mankind.

The visitors will already be totally incredulous when I tell them that Melvin told us that all previous religions were false. This will really get to them. Anything they say, I will answer by quoting Melvin. This will especially frustrate the Mormons as this is what they do with the “Book of Mormon” and Joseph Smith. Since they are on my front step, they will have to argue with me or leave. I will have an answer for anything they present. It will be fun watching them dance trying to convince me that their man-made nonsense is superior to my man-made malarkey. If they are smart, they will just leave.

While thinking this up, I had more ideas. What if I made this into a real religion and made buckets of tax-free money? If done right, we could get a lot of fools to buy into the new creed. I could put together a panel of hucksters to help me write the “Book of Melvin” and then sell the creed to the gullible public.  I could find marketing and psychological experts to help me put mind-grabbing words and phrases into the book. I could then find a super orator/salesman to be the public face and make the infomercials and the speeches. Too bad Billy Mays is dead.

We could tell the foolish everything they wanted to hear…things like Melvin wants them to prosper and be happy. To get there, they would need to buy the “Word of Melvin” DVD set for $39.95.  Of course, there would also be plenty of Melvin paraphernalia available for purchase including coffee mugs, bumper stickers, t-shirts and posters. I could travel around in the Melvin luxury motor home. Once the money was pouring in, we could go big-time and open “Melvin World” in Orlando.

Of course, this would all be much easier to do if I just thought up a new Christian denomination. There doesn’t seem to be any barriers to entry so it wouldn’t be as difficult as opening a whole new religion. But Melvinism would be more fun since we get to be more creative by starting from scratch. Like all other religions, we would not need any scientific evidence or even need to logical.

Problem is I’m just not a con-man so I couldn’t pull it off.  And I try to be honest and ethical. Those traits have nothing to do with religion and are actually possessed by most atheists.
