Voices of Atheism

Atheist counters to some Biblical scripture.

To anyone who says someone on this list is not an atheist I direct you to Hemingway's quote: "All thinking men are atheists." One does not need to be a universal atheist to contribute an atheistic quote.

Sacrificing Goats Is Dangerous

(video below transcript)

Patrician Atheist Here.

Apparently it isn’t as safe to sacrifice your goats as it used to be in the good old days in northern India, because an argument over who was going to have their goats sacrificed first resulted in a stampede that killed 10 people and injured over a dozen others today. When you consider that more than 40,000 Hindus had taken their goats to the Tildiha temple to ritually murder them the odds don’t look so bad. And besides, I bet the ten victims who were trampled to death after the scuffle over whose goats the butcher was going to kill next didn’t even sacrifice their goats yet so that probably accounts for their poor fortune.

There are also reports that many of the Hindus in line to sacrifice their goats were drunk so hopefully the trampled were among the inebriated for their sake. In any event the humans fared far better than the goats today, because it is reported that about 30,000 were butchered. I bet there was no alcohol in their systems and for their sake they better hope they are reincarnated as a cow in the same region, as it appears goats are not so sacred to Hindus – or at least not so sacred that they can’t be killed for a blessing from the goddess Durga.

As for those Hindus who were able to sacrifice their goats, I’m sure they’ll be able live long lives without any misfortunes because they were able to sacrifice their goats. In the end, it is all superstition to me. And ten people had to die for it today.

Atheists, Agnostics Know More About Religion

(video below transcript)

Patrician Atheist Here.

So I was reading an LA Times article about a new Pew Survey titled the U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey and some interesting, though not very surprising results came out of this new survey.

Self-identifying Jews & Momons were the second most knowledgeable about religion – right behind the self-identifying atheists and agnostics who were most likely to answer the survey’s queries properly.

The survey gave some reasons for this:

It cites that many self-identifying atheists and agnostics grew up in a religious environment and consciously gave religion up after considerable reflection and study.

It also cites the fact that self-identifying atheists and agnostics are relatively well educated and knowledgeable and that in the survey they outperformed their religious counterparts with similar educational backgrounds.

The relatively poor performance of many religious participants in the survey was explained by Rev. Adam Hamilton who asserted that religious people tend to accept their faith as the truth, stop examining it and don’t care to examine other people’s faiths. Talk about blind faith.

Some other interesting facts from the survey include:

Self-identifying Mormons were found to have more knowledge of the Bible than even evangelical Christians

A majority of self-identifying Protestants couldn't identify Martin Luther

Four in ten self-identifying Catholics showed they didn’t understand the sacrament of Holy Communion by stating the wine and bread presented to the faithful are only symbolizing the blood and body of Christ – as opposed to actually becoming the blood and body of Christ.

Some faint bright spots for the faithful:
8 in 10 knew Mother Teresa was a Catholic - 8 in 10.
7 in 10 knew Moses lead the Jews out of Egypt and Jesus was born in Bethlehem - 7 in 10.

Patrician Atheist,

NO FALLEN CREATURE

(video below text)

We are human
We love, We hate
We fail, We succeed
We conflict, We cooperate
We destroy, We create
We are passionate and indifferent
We are imperfect and fallible
We think, We are impulsive
We are strong, We are weak and frail
We are pragmatic, We are imaginative and creative
We are wise, We are foolish
We are prideful and arrogant,
We are humble
We are dignified, We are shameful
We are sincere, We are deceitful
We have clarity of purpose and a desire for meaning
We are wrong, We are right
We gain both strength and weakness from unity and divisiveness
We are creatures of profound principle and glaring contradictions
We are human

Yet We are no fallen creature
We should not loath ourselves for being what nature has made us
What We are
We are human

Our lives have inherent value
Inherent worth and meaning
Our potential is limitless
When embracing the world as it is
Not how We wish to see it
We are human

You May Be a Religious Zealot IF…

You are obsessed with the sexual behavior of others and seek to impose your own puritanical restrictions on everyone around you.

You believe a supremely powerful deity must fight with a former subordinate for control over a world he allegedly created.

You are convinced politicians you support are being guided by your god.

You believe your god is a means of revenge by which you can settle scores with those who have personally slighted you.

You oppose abortion but enthusiastically support the death penalty.

You believe capital punishment is an effective penalty and deterrent to violent crime.

You are convinced the death penalty is a wholly appropriate punishment for apostasy.

You embrace the death penalty for those who commit crimes but oppose an individual’s right to die when they are suffering and there is no hope of recovery.

You view prayer as an effective means of helping others and a general means of getting things done.

You cry, bitch and moan when you have been offended but couldn't give a shit if others are offended by you and your beliefs.

You believe burning or otherwise destroying objectionable writing and art is an appropriate way of dealing with ideas you deem to be contrary to your own.

You believe secularism is dangerous but blurring the line between church and state until you can no longer tell the difference between the two is not.

Patrician Atheist,

Good Day.

You oppose abortion even in the cases of rape and incest.

You believe a book written by men living in the Bronze Age is infallible.

You are willing to die and/or kill others for your beliefs.

You are convinced everyone who does not believe what you believe is going to suffer for all eternity upon death.

You think homosexuality is a sin and/or homosexuals should be put to death.

You view children as nothing more than props to be used for the survival, expansion and agenda of your religion.

You accuse atheists of being arrogant for denying your god but have no problem arrogantly speaking on behalf of your god.

You think anyone who critiques or disagrees with your religious beliefs is an immediate enemy who must be silenced.

You are convinced anyone who opposes your religious beliefs is under the influence of the Devil and/or demons.

You have the hubris to believe a supremely powerful divine being created you, cares about you and is always on your side.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

On Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 Haiti was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

On the Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 broadcast of the 700 Club televangelist Pat Robertson said that the devastating earthquake in Haiti was the result of a pact with the Devil that the Haitians made prior to overthrowing the French and gaining their freedom from bondage in the Haitian Revolution.

In response to the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7th, 1941 the United States declared war on Japan on December 8th, 1941. Germany and Italy then declared war on the United States on December 11th, 1941, and the US returned the favor that same day. Japan never declared war on Russia to support its German ally. Russia declared war on Japan on August 8th, 1945 two days after the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and one day before another was dropped on Nagasaki.

Admiral Yamamoto, the architect of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, did not survive the war in the Pacific and was assassinated on April 18th, 1943 when American P-38s ambushed and shot down the plane he was traveling in.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt died on April 12th, 1945 of a devastating cerebral hemorrhage. His death occurred before the war was finished in Europe or the Pacific.

Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini was killed by Italian partisans on April 28th, 1945 after a failed attempt to escape from Northern Italy into Switzerland.

Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin survived the war as a victor and established the Soviet Union as one of the world’s two superpowers. He died on March 5th, 1953 under less than clear circumstances and of an apparent brain hemorrhage.

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill survived the war in Europe as a victor, but his party lost the 1945 general election and he was ousted as government leader just before the war in the Pacific ended. He would be prime minister once more (26 October 1951 – 7 April 1955) prior to death on January 24th, 1965 after suffering a major stroke fifteen days before.

God, Christians Need Satan

(video under transcript)

Patrician Atheist Here.

"The beauty of religious mania is that it has the power to explain everything. Once God (or Satan) is accepted as the first cause of everything which happens in the mortal world, nothing is left to chance...logic can be happily tossed out the window." ..........Stephen King

This quote is an apt representation of Christianity and a fantastic commentary on the way the religion and its followers work, especially (though of course not exclusively) those from the more conservative and fundamentalist denominations. It also illustrates why God needs the second major deity of Christianity – Satan – to survive.

The very foundation of Christianity, no matter the denomination, is the belief there is an ongoing conflict between good and evil that we, as fallen creatures, are ignorant and helpless pawns in. And with this horrid idea comes an inherent belief in absolutes and encouragement of viewing the world we live in through a black and white lens. This superstitious worldview has two opposing teams with no room in the middle because they are so hopelessly opposed and their conflict so all-encompassing that if you are not abiding by the will of God you are automatically an unwitting tool of Satan and/or his agents. Quite frankly the Christian mindset is you are either with me or against me – and good is what they represent so you must be evil – in their troubled minds anyway.

Of course, what is good and what is evil in the eyes of the alleged infallible deity of Christianity is still open to the interpretation of fallible men. If you follow what Christianity says, according to the Christian judging you, you are following God's will and guidance and are righteous; if not you are being manipulated by Satan, get a trip to Hell and are clearly a fool - after all, the biggest lie about Satan is that he doesn't exist, which is correct when you replace the word lie with the word truth.

This world view is not only black and white but extremely destructive to logic, the progress, worth and image of humanity and our understanding of the natural, or real world, we live in. It also conveniently reduces opponents of Christianity to immediate enemies who are tactless pawns of Satan and can be immediately dismissed. Because Christians are in such good company, right?

Sure, not all Christians view the world like this – like the salad bar Christians who simply take elements of the faith they like – but there are certainly vocal groups of Christians that do. And to any Christian who would claim that this view is virtually non-existent in Christianity, you are fooling yourself. While no one can put a number on how many Christians view the world in such extremes and persist under this fantasy, it is clearly prevalent in fundamentalist and more conservative Christian sects.

And to those Christians who do persist under this delusion, an atheist or other religious skeptic cannot object to Christianity on the basis of his or her intellect, study and/or observations. The Christian under this pretense can simply not believe that another individual can be so rash to question them and their god on their own. They have such a lowly opinion of humanity and its capabilities that Satan must undoubtedly have a hand in it. You know, the guy who effectively shows Christianity to be polytheism by having two primary deities - God & Satan - of at least equal power who like to screw with humanity at every possible opportunity. And these deities are like two parents fighting in front of their children and forcing them to pick sides.

As a result, this vile polarized view of our reality is also extremely effective at trivializing truth and stifling any productive debate about their religion and its ridiculous positions on science, society, law and everything else. Atheists and other religious skeptics can hit an entrenched Christian upholding this extremist two-shaded world outlook with all the facts and evidence they have against Christianity and its positions. It won't matter; they will be unmoved in their faith to God. Satan and your silly facts can't trick them; their religion already beat you to it. Reason, logic, intellectual honesty and a genuine search for the truth all take a back seat to their categorically absurd religious truth, which feeds them the easy answers they crave and suckle on.

Christians (unlike atheists and other religious skeptics) are tools, but not like they think. They are not the tools of God, but of a faith and a superstition that has kept a sizable portion of mankind in bondage to their fabricated tyrant deity for the better part of two millennia. A tradition of servitude to their thug god that Christians unwittingly and willingly continue to defend tooth and nail. And how has this been accomplished? By playing humans – who they believe to be fallen creatures – against humanity through the false concept of Satan – the supreme enemy and cheerleader for evil.

And to be sure, God needs Satan, an enemy who is at least equal in power, to survive. Because without this nemesis the Christian system loses its overall meaning and all-encompassing purpose – to fight evil. It is as simple as that. And if not, why has God not destroyed Satan to save humanity and reign supreme? Because Satan is just as strong, and without him Christians may actually have to listen to their religion's opponents and give weight to arguments challenging their faith, not to mention admit that there is great truth in the grey area in between their black and white reality. That is something that can most definitely not occur as it would ultimately unweave the thread of lies that Christianity is founded upon.

In the end, the irony about this video is that Christians who watch it and buy into this extremist black and white, you are either with me or against me worldview will think Satan or one of his agents is responsible for this video because I, as a human and supposed fallen creature, am being influenced by Satan to persecute them and their religious faith. And because of this, everything I say – no matter how sensible, cutting and poignant – can be instantly ignored and the Christian can continue persisting in his or her self-sustaining world of delusion. Luckily this video is not meant for them, but rationalists.

This is a look at Christianity and this worldview from the outside. Because such Christians are being duped and trying to take the rest of humanity down with them with their over simplistic, intellectually dishonest and lazy perception of the world around them that spits in the face of truth and all legitimate efforts to find it. Christians need Satan more than they know, because without this antagonist the Christian system begins to fall apart. Of course, they already know this and think they also know exactly who is responsible for this video.
