President Bush held a ceremony for the visiting Pope and held talks afterwards. ABC news had this article on that meeting. Wow, what a pair of deluded hypocrites these two are, a comment from Bush:
“In a world where some invoke the name of God to justify acts of terror and murder and hate, we need [...]
Well I guess I might as well join the bandwagon and post a link to the Expelled Exposed web site.
If it’s good enough for Possummomma, it’s good enough for me.
PZ Myers has requested as many people to put the Expelled link on their site. In his own words:
We need to get the NCSE’s counter-site [...]
A christian ripping off other christians, who’d have thought?
See the video:
(Note: the link will make you watch a short advertisement first)
Church Conman
Typical Current Affairs, but I liked the bit where they showed who he learnt his dirty tricks from. Apparently, he’d go to one church (Anglican churches apparently) and rip off as many mugs as [...]
Well it looks like the debate “Islam is incompatible with democracy” was quite a success last night. So who won?
1200 people packed the City Hall last night, and after arguments from both sides, got to choose which side won. The verdict - the proposition went down by a narrow margin of 52 to 48 [...]
I’m an atheist, I don’t normally get religious correspondence, however, I had the most bizarre thing happen to me tonight. I received mail today (the old fashioned type from the post office), hand written addressed to me, which I opened whilst cooking dinner. Inside was a two page letter titled: The Importance of Jesus Christ. [...]
Yesterday I reported on the IQ2 debate, which is on tonight, and provided a link to the opening salvo from Daniel Pipes one of the speakers for the positive. Today, for fairness, I’m providing a link from Waleed Aly one of the speakers for the negative.
The people are speaking: democratic Islam is no contradiction
Waleed [...]
The IQ2 debate is tomorrow night, but Daniel Pipes has fired the first salvo today in his article in the SMH titled:
Give Muslims time to find democratic feet
Daniel’s opinion is, that given time Muslim countries could become as democratic as any other country. However,
In the meanwhile, Islamism represents the world’s leading anti-democratic force.
I’d have [...]
Well I was quite disappointed in not seeing any media coverage of the Operation Reconnect protest marches. Neither Channel 9 (NBN), SBS or ABC had any footage last night. Either they didn’t think it was news-worthy enough, or the the marches were so peaceful they thought it was too boring.
At least today’s Sun Herald newspaper [...]
from Reconnect.org
In our continuing efforts against the Church of Scientology, Anonymous is launching Operation Reconnect. Projected to take place in the month of April, this operation will shine a spotlight on families torn apart by the Church of Scientology.
The name of this operation stems from the Church of Scientology’s notorious ‘disconnection policy’, under which individuals [...]
Intelligence Squared Australia are putting on a series of live debates on some of the hot topics of the day. From the iq2 site this is the list of topics for this year:
15 April - Islam is incompatible with Democracy
20 May - China is not fit to host the Olympics
8 July - By 2020 only [...]
Richard Dawkins is to appear, as himself, in the current series of Dr Who.
Read all about it here.
As well as various other organisations, it appears the Rabbitohs (South Sydney Rugby League Club) are supporting the building of a new Hillsong mega-church in Sydney’s inner city. The proposed church has met with some opposition from locals who say it will flood the streets with noise and traffic.
Not to mention flooding the streets [...]
There seems to be conflicting reports on the impact of the Catholic World Youth Day (C-WYD). The SMH reported: Keep out if you’re not a pilgrim, warning of all the road closures in Sydney due to C-WYD. Sydney has been warned that
The disruptive impact of World Youth Day would be as great as the Asia-Pacific [...]
As part of Catholic World Youth Day (C-WYD) they are transporting a large cross around Australia trying to drum up interest in C-WYD. Compass (ABC1, Sunday nights) last night had a documentary about the carrying of the cross, which they compared in a way to the Olympic torch relay, through a few rural towns in [...]
Awarded to blogs or comments that make me think. The newest winners are Sean, for his Mercy Ministries/Hillsong Church/Gloria Jeans series and L. Ron Brown for his Scientology expose. I’ve spent so much (worthwhile) time reading these blogs, I’m left with little time to write my own. You can choose which award graphic you’d like:
Shaun [...]
I see wordpress has made big changes to the administration pages on our blogs (it was a bit of a surprise when I logged in today). The new Dashboard looks very smart and now includes stats on the page. I’ve only had a quick play today, but I think I like the new look; and [...]
I know I’ve been a bit light-on with my postings lately, I’ve been struggling with what to say. What with Sean reporting on the Mercy Ministries debacle, The Frame Problem reporting on the Church of Scientology (CoS), and Pharyngula, plus many others, reporting on the ‘Expelled from Expelled’ debacle, I feel like I haven’t been [...]
Seems like there is a cloned Pope/Bear on the loose! They’ve caught one, but this one is still lurking somewhere:
If you see him approach with caution, you know how vicious those bears popes can be.
Full story from here, and yes I realize it was an April fools joke, but it was funny.

Sean the Blogonaut has been doing a tremendous job keeping us all up to date on the Mercy Ministries story. For those of you not in the know see below for a brief synopsis. Anyway Sean has opened his blog to raise the profile of the girls adversely affected by the Mercy Ministries program. [...]
Austin Cline from atheism.about.com has created some Christian Propaganda Pictures in the style of those old WWI/WWII posters.
As Austin says:
As outrageous as the Christian Right’s overall agenda is, their specific arguments and beliefs can be worse.
The idea behind developing these posters was to satirise the beliefs of the Christian Right. These might be funny if [...]
The SMH has two articles today on the Twelve Tribes religious sect (or should that be cult?) and how they may be trying to woo recruits at their Common Ground cafe at the Royal Easter Show.
Now I’ll admit I’ve never heard of this sect before, but the second article raises some concerns. The article discusses [...]
PZ Myers, writer of the Pharyngula blog, was literally expelled from a screening of the creationist propaganda movie, Expelled. That in itself is fairly funny, but the real laugh is that they allowed his wife, daughter and guest in. His guest:
Richard Dawkins
Whole heartedly agree with what Greta Christina (NSFW) said:
The creationist movement: stifling debate, and [...]
Two authors have accused the Vatican of having their novel blacklisted in Italy. The historical novel Imprimatur, which will be published in Australia in May, suggests a 17th century Pope had funded the Protestant hero William III.
The authors claim that documents found in the Vatican secret archive and the Italian state archives suggest William [...]
but I can see some members of the community having a problem with this new offering:
Thanks to Friendly Atheist for this find.
I’ve known for a while that Gloria Jean’s coffee franchises were linked to Hillsong Church, and that was enough for me to stop buying their coffee (not to mention it was massed produced, often weak and poorly made, with no service and usually served in a paper cup). Thanks to the AFA and SPA forums [...]
Surprise surprise, the new Labor government has realised that the public schools might not be funded as well as some of the private schools. Why private (read, religious) schools should get any money off the government, let alone the enormous amounts they currently do, is a question unto itself. However, it looks like the federal [...]
I’m back from my lovely, and very warm, holiday in Adelaide. With maximum temperatures over 35O C each day (and still) and temperatures above 30 even at midnight it made for some very warm times. Hanging around Fringe Festival events, such as “The Garden of Unearthly Delights” till the wee small hours was quite pleasant [...]
Well I’m off to sunny Adelaide, the City of Churches, for family business/holiday so I might not be blogging for a few days. If I get a chance I’ll find an Internet cafe and post a few travel pictures, and maybe a comment or two.
Cheers, don’t forget to read my last few posts:
