Good News And Bad News On The Homophobic Front This Week: The Religious Are Surely Losing Ground.

Cross posted @ the Atheist Oasisfox-nation-on-obama-gay-marriage

The bad news is that North Carolina has reinforced the backward-assed stereotyped image the South has developed since it got its ass kicked back in the Civil War, by shoving religious discriminatory practices into law.

A snippet says it all;

"We are not anti-gay; we are pro-marriage," said Tami Fitzgerald, chairwoman of the group. "And the point -- the whole point -- is simply that you don't rewrite the nature of God's design for marriage based on the demands of a group of adults."

By the very definition and nature of their second-hand shepherd’s storybook, they most certainly are anti-gay. And then they have the chutzpah to hide behind their imaginary buddy (hey, psst – yeah, you! We can see you…because there’s NOBODY THERE, you delusional freaks!).

This is irritating and tiresome. We’re in the 21st century already: this is a non-debate.

The good news is, that our first black president has ‘flip-flopped’ on the issue.

President Obama today announced that he now supports same-sex marriage, reversing his longstanding opposition amid growing pressure from the Democratic base and even his own vice president.

In an interview with ABC News' Robin Roberts, the president described his thought process as an "evolution" that led him to this decision, based on conversations with his staff members, openly gay and lesbian service members, and his wife and daughters.

"I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together; when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that 'don't ask, don't tell' is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married," Obama told Roberts in an interview to appear on ABC's "Good Morning America" Thursday.

I find this to be worth some cautious celebration. Obama is still a Christian, after all: and he has vacillated on this issue; pro gay marriage in 1996, against it in 2004, and changing stances between 2009 and the present.

One of the worst litmus tests of our society, is that elected officials commit political suicide if they change their minds on an issue. This is almost tantamount (for them) to being caught making out with a gay person after strenuously pursuing anti-homosexual rhetoric and legislation. It is considered hypocrisy of the highest order.

Changing one’s mind after weighing the facts and evidence should be allowable, and usually it is. Scientists do it regularly. Any rational person would agree to these premises. But politicians? Sorry, not allowed.

Somehow, sheer bull-headedness seem to be hallmarks of both the religious and the political: and if ever the twain intertwine, it becomes a Gordian knot that has only one solution.

Kidnapped For Christ–More Proof The Religious Are Delusional

Cross-posted @ the Atheist Oasis

The empty life of this ugly little charlatan proves only one thing, that you can get away with the most extraordinary offenses to morality and to truth in this country if you will just get yourself called reverend. – Christopher Hitchens, on Jerry Falwell.

Here’s more proof that Christians are among the weirdest wackjobs around:

Crazy Church In Pennsylvania Kidnaps Teens To Teach Them A Lesson

There are some parts of the country that are filled with religious centers.  It almost seems like the churches outnumber the residents.  Members of these communities check their day jobs at the door of the church as they walk in.  Sometimes they check their sanity at the door too.
This was most clearly the case in Middletown, Pennsylvania at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God.  Members of this particular church decided it would be a great idea to kidnap the teenagers--at gunpoint--and take them to their pastors house.  The would be assailants then pretended to assault the pastor.  At no point did the children know what was going on, and many of them left the exercise traumatized and bruised.
The ramifications could be huge for the church.  False imprisonment of a minor can carry a 10 year prison sentence.
I have had the privilege of driving through the great town of Middletown, PA.  It is a very nice place.  That being said, there isn't a a whole lot to do for entertainment in Middletown.  I guess they have resorted to kidnapping children for fun.
Ok, maybe it wasn't for "fun," but the excuse the church gives is weak.  They claim the exercise is used to show the kids what it is like to be a persecuted Christian missionary.
They probably could have gotten their point across the legal way by just showing the youth group the film "The Passion of the Christ."  Eh, the legal way is too boring for the folks of Glad Tidings.  They go hard.

One would think the church, when confronted with the legal ramifications of their actions, would apologize profusely for their actions.  Nope.  The pastor of Glad Tidings, Andrew Jordan, says he will continue the exercise despite complaints.  Rest assured, Andrew does however promise to get parental permission next time.  I'm sure the justice system of Pennsylvania will feel much better now.

I hope somebody talks some sense into the good people of Good Tidings.  What they are doing is a terrible idea and it could land someone behind bars if they aren't careful.  Having a system of faith is great, but there is a certain degree of common sense that is lacking among a large portion of the religious population.  We need to start putting the rule of law, and our American values of freedom and fairness back in the forefront of our decision-making.

Accurate though it may be, if you read between the lines, it gets even more infuriating.

One would think the church, when confronted with the legal ramifications of their actions, would apologize profusely for their actions.

Wait, nobody was arrested? Of course not: it turns out one of the main wackjobs is a cop:

WHTM also reported the man who "kidnapped" the teens was an off-duty cop, using a real, but unloaded, gun.

And what does the witch-doctor-in-charge say?

In the midst of potential legal ramifications, Andrew Jordan, the church's pastor, told WHPTV he will still continue to carry out this lesson, but he will ask for parental permission.

It is a sad state of affairs for any country, that the only time people get a free pass on this sort of behavior, is when they hide beneath the umbrella of the delusional. Had it been anyone else besides a religious cult doing this, we would be able to hear the bars of the cell slam shut on them.

But instead the populace sings paeans to this poop: oh, to believe, to bathe in the self-indulgences of belief as if it were bubble bath; to become all warm and squishy inside at the thought of societally approved mental masturbation.

It is to weep, at the idiocy of others.

(As an aside, I searched assiduously for the video for the episode Pier Pressure, where George Bluth Sr. used a one armed man to scare the shit out of his pre-pubescent kids to ‘teach them a lesson’, but could only come up with the video above: I felt, however, that it was still quite illustratory.)

Boris Johnson faces legal action over banned anti-gay bus adverts

Evangelical Christian groups who funded ads say they may seek judicial review, claiming their human rights have been breached

Boris Johnson is facing legal action after cancelling bus adverts paid for by evangelical Christian groups that promoted the idea that gay people can be converted from homosexuality.

The groups behind the "Not gay … and proud" adverts, which were pulled by the London mayor earlier this month, said they were likely to seek a judicial review of the mayor's decision on the grounds that it breached their rights to freedom of religion and freedom of expression as guaranteed under the European convention on human rights.

Anglican Mainstream and the Core Issues Trust, whose supporters advocate that gay Christians seek counselling and treatment to curb or even reverse homosexual instincts, said it might also take legal action for breach of contract against the advertising company that booked the adverts, CBS Outdoor.

"Since Boris Johnson intervened, there seems to be a much broader issue about freedom of speech at stake and that is weighing heavily upon us," said the Rev Lynda Rose, a spokeswoman for Anglican Mainstream. "We feel it is not right that people are not able to express legitimate views that are not an incitement to hatred."

The adverts were due to start running last week on London buses. The slogan, "Not gay! Ex-gay, post-gay and proud. Get over it!", was a response to an ongoing bus advertising campaign being run by the gay rights group Stonewall which states: "Some people are gay. Get over it." Within two hours of the Guardian revealing that the ads had been booked, they were cancelled by Johnson, who said: "It is clearly offensive to suggest that being gay is an illness that someone recovers from and I am not prepared to have that suggestion driven around London on our buses." His rivals in the campaign to become the next London mayor, Ken Livingstone and Brian Paddick, also condemned the adverts.

Critics of the evangelical groups have claimed that "reparative therapy" for gay Christians can cause considerable distress and stores up problems for people who suppress their homosexuality and enter into marriages or have children in heterosexual relationships. But the leader of the Core Issues Trust, Mike Davidson, has said: "Homoerotic behaviour is sinful."

The row over the adverts blew up during the government consultation on opening up marriage to same-sex couples, which continues until June, and Anglican Mainstream and the Core Issues Trust are set against the proposals. On Tuesday, they accused liberal bishops of imposing a "neo-pagan worldview" by supporting gay marriage and claiming there should be "a recognition of God's grace at work in same-sex partnerships".

On Saturday, a group of Church of England bishops wrote to the Times complaining that recent statements by church leaders had given the mistaken impression that the Anglican church was universally opposed to the extension of civil marriage to same-sex couples.

"The fact there are same-sex couples who want to embrace marriage should be a cause for rejoicing in the Christian church," said the letter, signed by the Very Rev Jeffrey John, dean of St Albans, the Right Rev Alan Wilson, bishop of Buckingham, and 13 other senior clergy and lay members of the General Synod.

In response, Anglican Mainstream and the Core Issues Trust issued a statement warning that the liberal clergy were trying to "unacceptably redefine Judeo-Christian belief".

"They do not have the standing either to rewrite or reinterpret the clear teaching of the Bible, which the Church has always understood to prohibit any and all sexual relations outside the union for life of one man and one woman," said Canon Dr Chris Sugden, executive secretary of Anglican Mainstream.

All sorts of (ridiculous) questions arise: how are their ‘human rights’ being violated? Freedom of speech? Seriously? Homophobia isn’t a right, anymore than bragging about it is. Claiming that there’s another side to the argument in the 21st century is just pig-headed stupidity.

Good on Boris Johnson for handing these ass clowns their walking papers. Of course the idiots in question are carrying on – it’s that frakkin’ martyr complex again, the one that seems to get embedded in their brainaries when they start doing the epileptic Watusi upon embracing the ‘unconditional love’ of their imaginary pal jebus.

Really, all religion is, is raging narcissism coupled with bad self-esteem.

Pa. priest-abuse trial painful, poignant for Catholics

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Graphic testimony in a Philadelphia clergy-abuse trial this month has ripped open secret church files and reopened old wounds among Catholics as scarred men and women tell jurors that priests groped, molested or raped them as teens.painful and poignant, especially that of a 48-year-old man who said he had been in love with his parish priest during a five-year sexual relationship that began in ninth grade — and jealous when the priest allegedly bedded down at his farmhouse with other teens.

The stories have been told before, in two Philadelphia grand jury reports and in lawsuits filed around the country.

But Monsignor William Lynn's decision to go to trial on child-endangerment charges stemming from his 12 years as secretary for clergy has brought the grand jury reports to life — and seemingly put the archdiocese on trial. The judge is allowing testimony about more than 20 accused but uncharged priests, because Lynn knew of complaints lodged against them or took part in internal church investigations.

The accused priests were left in ministry, often transferred to unsuspecting parishes.

Nearly a dozen alleged victims have testified, while internal church memos and Lynn's 2002 grand jury testimony have been read aloud. And jurors will soon hear from a former altar boy who says he was raped by two priests and his fifth-grade teacher.

"None of these scandals rock my faith. I believe in church teaching and these scandals don't cause me to doubt it. But it's very discouraging in terms of the Catholic hierarchy in the American church and its inability to deal" with abuse allegations, said Joseph Fuisz, 41, a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, native who now lives in Florida and Washington, D.C., and is following the trial closely.

Lynn is the first U.S. church official charged with helping the church cover up complaints of child sexual abuse. He faces up to 28 years in prison if convicted.

"A lot of the information may not be new, but it's got a particularly salient impact … because it's personal testimony — in court, under oath, on the record, with a lot of media coverage," said Timothy Lytton, a University of Albany law professor who wrote a book on Catholic clergy abuse. "I think it turns the heat up."

One father of six belatedly told the archdiocese that his son had been "extremely upset" about playing Jesus as a child in a sadomasochistic Passion play — but he and his wife "let it go." In another instance, the man allegedly abused at the farmhouse of the Rev. Stanley Gana said he confided to his mother years later about the abuse, only to be told she planned to remain friends with the priest.

A woman said she had asked to quit a weekend rectory job where the pastor groped her as a teen, but her parents wouldn't hear of it. Her sisters followed her into the job — and were also fondled, she said.

"People nowadays are simply much more questioning of authority," said Nick Ingala, spokesman for Voice of the Faithful, a Boston-based group formed in the wake of the abuse crisis to try to empower lay Catholics. "The accountability here, and the transparency coming about (in the trial) … is really the most important thing that's happening."

Many of the women who have testified this month to being fondled sound angry. But the male accusers are shattered. They were more often emotionally entangled with the priest, and say the abuse involved oral sex or sodomy.

"The hope is that this is the last incident we ever hear of in this archdiocese," lawyer Jim Ledyard said Friday, after noon Mass at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. "I think many of us would be devastated if any further abuse is uncovered."

The cathedral sits beside the archdiocesan offices where Lynn worked from 1992 to 2004, most of it under the late Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua.

Lynn, 61, is on trial with the Rev. James Brennan, 48, who is charged with sexually assaulting a teen in 1996. Each has pleaded not guilty. Defrocked priest Edward Avery, 69, pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges days before trial, and is serving a 2-1/2 to 5-year prison term.

Avery admitted to a 1999 attack on the altar boy. Another priest and former teacher from the northeast Philadelphia parish will go on trial separately later this year. That means disturbing revelations about the church will continue to shake out, even after Lynn's scheduled 12- to 16-week trial.

And it remains unclear if prosecutors are finished with the decade-long investigation of the Philadelphia archdiocese. One of Gana's accusers said he was once raped at a house owned by Bishop Michael Bransfield of West Virginia. Bransfield, a former Philadelphia priest and Gana friend, issued a statement saying he wasn't home at the time. And he forcefully denied trial allegations that he may have molested someone.

Poignant? I’m going to have to go with repugnant. What is it with these people? Is the concept of a state of innocence (as prescribed in their ‘holy’ book) inculcate a state of priapism for these celibates? Or are they just so incomplete, that they can’t establish any sort of adult relationships of an intimate nature?

And of course, there’s only two sides to this debacle:

Bransfield's diocese called the trial "a circus" and said Philadelphia prosecutors are trying to "smear individuals not on trial … to bolster their persecution of the church."

Fuisz disagrees.

"There is nothing wrong with this prosecution, nothing whatsoever," he said. "You don't take our love for the church and its teaching, and our wonderful tradition, and wield those around as artillery in a defense of Lynn."

The third option is better: if there was such a thing as a loving god, it sure as hell wouldn’t allow this to happen. Along with the uncounted other horrendous events that occur on a regular basis.

We need to be rid of these cherished institutions, these purveyors of hidden perversion, these antiquated anachronisms, these wearers of funny hats (though the hats can stay, come to think of it: some of them are hilarious).

Religion: the sooner our species is rid of it, the better.

I wish we lived in a place more like the America of yesteryear that only exists in the brains of us Republicans. santorumdick - Ned Flanders

I don’ know about the rest of you, but I wiped some sweat from my brow and sighed with relief when this assclown didn’t quite cut  the mustard.

Santorum: Obama Has Put America On ‘The Path’ Of Executing Religious People By Decapitation

Rick Santorum continued to rail against President Obama’s so-called war against religion during a town hall in Plano, Texas Wednesday night. The former Pennsylvania senator — who has spent the last several days criticizing the government’s requirement that insurers provide contraception coverage and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal’s decision striking down Proposition 8 — accused the administration of “crushing” religion and setting the United States on the path towards executing religious people by decapitation:

SANTORUM: They are taking faith and crushing it. Why? Why? When you marginalize faith in America, when you remove the pillar of God-given rights, then what’s left is the French Revolution. What’s left is the government that gives you right, what’s left are no unalienable rights, what’s left is a government that will tell you who you are, what you’ll do and when you’ll do it. What’s left in France became the guillotine. Ladies and gentlemen, we’re a long way from that, but if we do and follow the path of President Obama and his overt hostility to faith in America, then we are headed down that road.

No, Clogburn, we aren’t.  This is apples-to-oranges, a typical maneuver among the addle-pated Republicans. The closest parallel is here:

Louis XVI ascended to the throne amidst a financial crisis; the state was nearing bankruptcy and outlays outpaced income. This was because of France’s financial obligations stemming from involvement in the Seven Years War and its participation in the American Revolutionary War.

Oh, and this too:

Necker realized that the country's extremely regressive tax system subjected the lower classes to a heavy burden, while numerous exemptions existed for the nobility and clergy.

But there the analogy breaks. The French aristocracy ruled by divine fiat. In fact, there was a great deal of resentment because of the Church’s wealth and influence. And in fact, feudalism was abolished during said revolution.

Oh, and there was a national tithe, as well:

The National Assembly began to enact social and economic reform. Legislation sanctioned on 4 August 1789 abolished the Church's authority to impose the tithe.

Yes, the church charged 10%, and yes, some of that was re-distributed to the poor, but the Holy Cee was famous even then for their opulence, and – well, free money is free money.

A lot of this nonsense is revised and ridiculous. We are nowhere near putting the religious in the dire straits they imagine they are in. No one is trying to ‘de-Christianize’ anything. The reality of the matter is that people are far more knowledgeable, and knowledge is nigh well instant in this day and age.

In a nutshell: old Rooster is a cock-a-doodling at a gibbous moon and claiming it’s made of green cheese.

And in the following clip, Lewis Black demolishes Santorum:

Bunnies And Zombies? Can Religious Belief Get Any More Surreal?

Sweet Zombie Jesus! –Prof. Farnsworth from Futurama

Yes, it’s that time of year again, when zombies and rabbits combine to make thanatophobia more palatable to the unwashed masses.

And yes, Jesus was, by the strictest definition of the word, a zombie.

That is to say, that a zombie is:

(Haitian Creole: zonbi; North Mbundu: nzumbe)  an animated corpse brought back to life by mystical means, such as witchcraft. The term is often figuratively applied to describe a hypnotized person bereft of consciousness and self-awareness, yet ambulant and able to respond to surrounding stimuli. Since the late 19th century, zombies have acquired notable popularity, especially in North American and European folklore.

The brain-eating nonsense came later. The question to that, is: why on earth would they eat anything? Bodily fluids have ceased to flow – by what logic would these shambling monstrosities even be hungry? No reason, it just makes a better story.

An  amusing aside (apropos of very little but the topic itself), I recall many years ago reading about Solomon Kane, a Robert E. Howard character, who battled hordes of zombies, until his African shaman friend N’Longa summoned vultures to save him.

Which begs the next question: why aren’t birds, or other carrion feeders swarming over these things? Or insect life?

But I digress.

And the unanswerable question (unanswered because it cannot possibly make any sense), is how an immortal being can sacrifice himself to himself to correct the flaw built into the alleged creation?

Ridiculous is the word for it. And I’m being kind.

Anyways, I’ll leave you all with a clip of one of my all-time favorite comics, Sam Kinison, who talks about how crazy it might have been.

If a million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing. – Anatole France

(Hat tip to Godlessliberals.com for this one)

Crazy Christians are consistent, if not logical. They lead with their indignation and their imagined righteousness. And when people shrug off their ridiculous rage, they immediately go to bully mode. Case in point:

Ellen DeGeneres responds to group opposing her new JC Penney job

Ellen DeGeneres publicly responded to One Million Moms, the self-described “conservative, pro-family” group who opposes her new role as JC Penney spokeswoman, on the day that California’s ban on same-sex marriage, Proposition 8, was ruled unconstitutional.

On an episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” taped Tuesday and airing Wednesday, the host said, “Normally I try not to pay attention to my haters, but this time I’d like to talk about it ’cause my haters are motivators.”

“This organization doesn’t think that I should be the spokesperson because I’m gay. For those of you are just tuning in for the first time, it’s true. I’m gay. I hope you were sitting down,” DeGeneres joked.

In a statement on its Web site, One Million Moms, who have previously objected to Chaz Bono’s inclusion on “DWTS” and Ben & Jerry’s Schweddy Balls ice cream, said, “By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years.”

DeGeneres responded, “Being gay or pro-gay isn’t a bandwagon. You don’t get a free ride anywhere. There’s no music. ... Occasionally we’ll sing ‘We Are Family,’ but that’s about it.”

As the comedienne pointed out, she had received an outpouring of support in the comments section on the One Million Moms’s Facebook page. DeGeneres was also defended by JC Penney, wh4ch said in a statement they “stand behind [the] partnership,” and by Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly, who called the boycott “a witch hunt.”

Holy shit – when Bill O’Reilly is the voice of reason, you know the other side should be titled ‘a million maniacs’.

What sets my nape hairs on end, is that there are actually only 40,000 of these ‘million’ nutters (as Ellen points out in her succinct and classy video) – and while she is more forgiving than is necessary, the non-surprise is that these busybody old biddies tacked on an extra 60,000 (give or take) in numbers, boils down to an odious, outright LIE. And that they use some millennial  magical merde to back up their alleged ‘traditional values’ (yeah, right, like lying is a ‘traditional value’ – oh wait, if you’re religious, it is).

This sort of thing gets right up my nose. While this dates back to February, it’s still fresh enough to dive-bomb their discriminatory Facebook page, and let them know just how the atheist segment feels about it.

Because obviously they prayed real hard, and nothing happened. So they likely went and started a tempest in a teapot. Chances are strong they’ll begin to whinge on about how they’re the persecuted people, if track records are any indication.

So go give them a holler, and give ‘em a little hell (pun intended). They don’t deserve any courtesy, for their homophobic ways.

The Madness Of Muslim: Guns A-Blazing, Another Maniac Mohammed

The body count keeps mounting, despite what all the Islamic apologists say:

Jewish school slayings suspect dead after France cops storm apartment, officials say

Updated at 10:58 a.m. ET: TOULOUSE, France -- An Islamist extremist who is believed to have killed seven people in France died Thursday after a shootout with police, officials said.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said that Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old French citizen of Algerian origin who had allegedly confessed to killing three Jewish children and four adults, was hiding in a bathroom when special forces officers raided his ground-floor apartment.

Merah leapt out a window with a weapon in his hand after "shooting madly" at police who were attempting to end the 32-hour standoff, Gueant added.

The Paris prosecutor in charge of investigation told NBC News police found the video camera he used to film all three attacks and described the footage they found as "very graphic."

Merah was found dead outside his home, Gueant said. Police union sources also confirmed Merah's death, with local prosecutors also saying he had been shot in the head.

Gueant said that two officers were injured during the operation.

Merah told negotiators he killed three soldiers, three Jewish children and a rabbi to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and because of French army involvement in Afghanistan.

Authorities said Merah, who claimed to have received training from al-Qaida, was believed to have a weapons cache in the apartment including an Uzi and a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

I find this sort of thing frightening, inasmuch as it occurs all too frequently over the last decade. There has been a constant barrage of bad press – and it’s far too easy to say, “Oh, but the press only shows the bad shit”, because it’s reached a saturation point where only the most deluded of delusionists would mouth the empty platitude that “it’s only a few crazies making the religion look bad”. Especially since the religion is mostly composed of crazies (as most of them are).

Another ominous foreshadowing, is the Wiki entry on this lunatic:

He was known to French authorities because he had traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan. He was unemployed at the time of the shootings, after having worked as a coachbuilder. Merah had a long record as a juvenile delinquent with 15 convictions, according to a regional French prosecutor. First arrested in 2005, he served two short prison terms in 2007 and 2009. His convictions reportedly included thefts and driving offences.

The major inference here, is that he couldn’t really afford an Uzi and a Kalashnikov, let alone the bullets. There will be no doubt that there will be a great deal of analysis (how many hours is anyone’s guess, but it’ll be too much) as to the whys and wherefores and how-comes – it’ll likely be attributed to terrorists, oh, them poor Muslims getting blamed for a lone nut, etc, etc, et al.

The underlying problem is that there are too many savages in all our societies, Western or otherwise, and religion is just another excuse, another umbrella for the wackjobs to hide under. Until the numbers get too huge to ignore.

Allegories Gone Wild: The Ugandan Warlord

Cross posted @ the Atheist Oasis
konyinfantryNo doubt many of you are familiar with the Kony 2012 campaign on Youtube. Joseph Kony is a Ugandan warlord who is guilty of horrendous crimes against humanity. Likelihood is good that the source of this campaign (who was scarring his own child teaching him about Kony) is somewhat out of his mind. Uganda is understandably upset about this bad press, and has released a counter-video claiming that Kony is no longer in the country, and that they are making every effort to apprehend this monster.

Regardless of the political upheaval, the background noise of finger-pointing, and any of the other obligatory nonsenses, the fact remains: Kony is a crazy-ass fairy beggar armed with a machete that he’s willing to use freely.

One of the more irritating subterfuges (as I see it), is how everyone seems to be downplaying his religious inclinations. From the Wiki link:

Joseph Kony (pronounced IPA: [koɲ]; born c. 1961) is the head of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a Ugandan guerrilla group. While initially enjoying strong public support, the LRA turned on its own supporters, supposedly to "purify" the Acholi people and turn Uganda into a theocracy. Kony proclaims himself the spokesperson of God and a spirit medium, primarily of the Holy Spirit, which the group believes can represent itself in many manifestations. Ideologically, the group is a syncretic mix of of mysticism, Acholi nationalism, and Christian fundamentalism, and claims to be establishing a theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments and local Acholi tradition.

A nutshell version of this as follows: he’s batshit crazy.

How did the madness develop? Like most nutcases, he started early:

Kony was born in 1961 in Odek, a village east of Gulu in northern Uganda, to father Luizi Obol and mother Nora, both farmers. He is a member of the Acholi people. Kony enjoyed a good relationship with his siblings, but was quick to retaliate in a dispute and when confronted he would often resort to physical violence. His father was a lay catechist of the Catholic Church and his mother was an Anglican. Kony was an altar boy for several years but stopped attending church around the age of 15 and also dropped out of school.

As a teenager, Kony was apprenticed as the village witch doctor under Jamie Brow, his older brother, and when Jamie died, Kony took over the position.

So superstition and crazy ran in the family? No surprise there. Let’s skip to the meat of the entry:

Kony's group was originally called the United Holy Salvation Army (UHSA), and was not perceived as a threat by the NRA. By 1988 it had become a major player in Ugandan affairs: an agreement between the NRA and the Uganda People's Democratic Army (UPDA) left members of the UPDA unsatisfied, and many joined the UHSA as a form of rebellion. One such person was Commander Odong Latek, who convinced Kony to use standard military tactics instead of attacking in cross-shaped formations and sprinkling holy water. The new tactics proved successful, and the UHSA completed several small victories against the NRA.

WOW. He was so religious, he attacked in cross-shaped formations? Misted people with ineffectual water? The crazy is strong with this one.

The NRA responded by significantly weakening Kony's group through political actions and a military campaign named Operation North. The operation was devastating to the UHSA and, with their numbers reduced from thousands to hundreds, they engaged in retaliatory attacks on civilians and NRA collaborators. The LRA say that spirits were sent to communicate this mission directly to Kony.

Since there’s no such thing as ‘spirits’, it was the voices in his head.

The bulk of Kony's foot soldiers were children. While estimates of the number of children conscripted since 1986 vary, some put the figure as high as 104,000. When abducting the children, Kony and his army often killed their family and neighbors, thus leaving the children with little choice but to fight for him. In 1992 Kony renamed the group the United Democratic Christian Army, and it was at this time that they kidnapped 139 girls from the Sacred Heart Secondary and St. Mary's girls schools.

It is strange, is it not, that for an allegedly peaceful religion, bloodthirsty ogres seem to surge forth from it on a consistent basis?

Let’s plumb the depths of this crazy a little more:

Betty Bigombe remembered that the first time she met Kony, his followers used oil to ward off bullets and evil spirits. In a letter regarding future talks, Kony stated that he must consult his self-styled holy spirit. When the talks did occur, they insisted on the participation of religious leaders and opened the proceedings with prayers, led by LRA's Director of Religious Affairs Jenaro Bongomi. During the 1994 peace talks, Kony was preceded by men in robes sprinkling holy water.

Kony was thought among followers and detractors alike to have been possessed by spirits; he has been portrayed as either the Messiah or the Devil. He reportedly made annual trips to the Ato Hills in Uganda. He would allegedly ascend to the highest of the hills and lie down in the hot sun for days. He would be covered by a blanket of red termites that bit deeply into his skin. Oil from the Yao plant was spread over his body. Then he would enter a cave and stay in seclusion for weeks. Kony believes in the literal protection provided by a cross symbol and tells his child soldiers a cross on their chest drawn in oil will protect them from bullets.

Kony believes in polygamy, and as of 2007 he was thought to have 88 wives, along with 42 children.

Kony insists that he and the Lord's Resistance Army are fighting for the Ten Commandments. He defends his actions: "Is it bad? It is not against human rights. And that commandment was not given by Joseph. It was not given by LRA. No, those commandments were given by God."

The mind boggles. Centuries ago this behavior would be considered holy. Now, it is symptomatic of severe mental illness. I would say that insane is too kind a word.

Did religion cause this profound disconnect with reality? Hard to say. Obviously his environment had a severe impact on his psyche. To the point somewhere along the line he thought he was justified in lopping the limbs off people, and stealing their children.

Every day, the evidence against keeping religion just gets another story deeper. Expanding on that metaphor, there should be enough skyscrapers to blot out the sun.

Tuesday Twofer: Better Off Ted

It’s unfortunate that this show got canceled after Season 2 - it’s wonky, the writing was good, and it was extremely funny.

More Of The Madness Of Muslim: Dress Codes Strictly Enforced

Cross posted @ the Atheist Oasis
shariaAre you getting a little sick of how everyone has to run a flagpole up their asses and fly a flag for Islam these days? From the U.N declaring that no one has a right to offend them to a judge who defends the right to violently assault the insulter of said religion – it’s gut-wrenching obsequiousness based on cowardice.

And it just gets progressively worse.

Dozens of Iraqi teenagers stoned to death for ‘emo’ haircuts: activists

Iraqi activists sounded the bell over the killing of dozens of teenagers by religious police for having “emo” haircuts.
Activists told the Cairo-based al-Akhbar daily that at least 90 Iraqi teenagers with “emo” appearances have been stoned to death by the Moral Police in the country in the past month. The violent crackdown against “emo” Iraqi teenagers came after the Iraqi interior ministry declared them as “devil worshippers.”

“The ‘Emo phenomenon’ or devil worshiping is being probed by the Moral Police who have the approval to eliminate it as soon as possible since it’s detrimentally affecting the society and becoming a danger,” according to a statement by the interior ministry.
“They wear strange, tight clothes that have pictures on them such as skulls and use stationery that are shaped as skulls. They also wear rings on their noses and tongues, and do other strange activities,” the statement added.
The statement said that Iraq’s Moral Police was granted approval by the Ministry of Education to enter Baghdad schools and pinpoint students with Western appearances.
The activists told the newspaper that a group of armed men dressed in civilian clothing led the teenagers to secluded areas a few days ago, stoned them to death, and then disposed their bodies in garbage dumpsters across the capital, Baghdad.
“First they throw concrete blocks at the boy’s arms, then at his legs, then the final blow is to his head, and if he is not dead by then, they start all over again,” one person who managed to escape told the daily.
The exact death toll remains unclear, but Hana al-Bayaty of Brussels Tribunal, an NGO dealing with Iraqi issues, said the current figure ranges “between 90 and 100.”
Activists said that leaflets were distributed in Baghdad warning teenagers from donning the “emo” style, and in some regions, teenage homosexuals were killed by battering their heads also by concrete blocks.

So the ‘Moral Police’ dispose of these…non-conformists…by torturing them to death? Who is more ‘moral’ then? Bands of religious vigilantes scouring the land, cruelly murdering anyone who violates their beloved ‘laws’? Some religion of peace.

There are many ways of dealing with teenage rebelliousness – but this nonsense is barbaric savagery, only worthy of being dealt with in the same way they dole out ‘punishment’.

You cannot cure a rabid dog – you cannot rationalize with the creature, you cannot apply any sort of cure to the disease.

Religion – letting mad dogs run rampant amongst us for centuries without apology or effort.

Till the next post, then.

Kook Cameron On Homosexuality

Cross posted @ the Atheist Oasis
rayandkurtOh, oops, I meant Kirk Cameron.

So this bit of news comes as no surprise to those of us familiar with this talentless hack’s ‘resume’:

'80s sitcom star turned religious activist Kirk Cameron is not a fan of homosexuality and he isn't shy about sharing his feelings on the subject.

Yeah, because 32 years later, people are still hanging on his every word. Sheesh!

During a new interview with Piers Morgan the "Growing Pains" heartthrob who transitioned from a "teen-idol-atheist in Hollywood and became a devoted follower of Jesus Christ in the middle of [his] career" explained that he believes homosexuality is "unnatural... I think that it's detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization."

So…the creator of the Crocoduck was a…an atheist? No, he was just a lazy thinker. As for the idea that ‘homosexuality is unnatural’, the latest tally is that 1500 species indulge in this behavior on a regular basis, so the sobriquet of ‘unnatural’ means that old Kook is still living in Imagination Land.

On the issue of marriage equality Cameron remarked, "Marriage was defined by God a long time ago. Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve -- one man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don't think anyone else should either. So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don't."

The old sorry-ass argument that ‘gawd said otherwise’ is as old and as tired as Camer-maroon. Imaginary sky daddies don’t define marriage – people do.

When asked what he would do if one of his six kids told him, "Dad, bad news, I'm gay," Cameron responded, "I'd sit down and I'd have a heart to heart with them, just like you'd do with your kids."

Christlation: “I am gonna PRAY the homosex-U-al day-mons outta you, boy! Get on your knees ay-and PRAY! Gawd’s gonna be wrathful, so you jist stop yore sinful ways!”

Morgan shot back, "I'd say, 'That's great, son! As long as you're happy.' What would you say?"

Cameron offered, "I wouldn't say 'That's great, son, as long as you're happy.' There are all sorts of issues we need to wrestle through in our life... Just because you feel one way doesn't mean we should act on everything we feel."

That’s advice you should’ve taken back when you became asshole buddies with Ray Comfort and started carting out incredibly stupid caricatures in your ‘spiritual battle’ with REAL science.

Really – why does this mook get any press at all? He was a child sitcom actor. He should get his own reality TV show…that is, when he actually comes into contact with it.

Either way, nobody’s seen him give up whatever ill-gotten gains he’s accreted over the decades to the poor.

This is just more proof that Hollywood and its denizens are the last place anyone should look for rationality. They specialize in fantasy, after all: small wonder so many of them retreat into a socially acceptable imaginary world.

Till the next post, then.
