Brainpower in Action: CFI’s Scholars at Work

One of the things that truly distinguishes the Center for Inquiry is its commitment to genuine scholarship and research. Associated with CFI, or on the CFI staff, are brilliant scholars who produce important original works in areas such as philosophy, scientific investigation, and public policy. Here is a sampling of some of the recent accomplishments of the scholars and writers involved with CFI.

President and CEO Ronald A. Lindsay, who has a PhD in philosophy and has written widely on the topic of bioethics, was invited to submit an essay on euthanasia to the International Encyclopedia of Ethics. This nine-volume work, which will be the authoritative source on ethics for many years, will be published later this year by Wiley-Blackwell. Underscoring the strong academic reputation of the Center for Inquiry, Ron is one of only two authors for the International Encyclopedia of Ethics who is not currently affiliated with a college or university.

Chris Mooney, host of CFI’s podcast Point of Inquiry, recently released to much fanfare his book The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Deny Science—and Reality, in which he explores brain scans, polls, and psychological experiments to explain why conservatives today believe more things that are not true, appear more likely than Democrats to oppose new ideas and less likely to change their beliefs in the face of new facts, and sometimes respond to compelling evidence by doubling down on their current beliefs.

Joe Nickell, Senior Research Fellow at the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, has a major book coming out soon on ghosts and hauntings. A former professional magician, Pinkerton detective, academic, and highly prolific author, Joe may be the world’s only full-time professional paranormal investigator. His new book, The Science of Ghosts: Searching for Spirits of the Dead, will undoubtedly provide the most comprehensive scientific look yet at the survival-of-death question. It examines the haunting impulse, spirit communication, and the pseudoscience of ghost hunting—just for starters. It will be released by Prometheus Books in June.

CFI Director of Education John Shook, coordinator of the Science and the Public Program, has edited two recent volumes on philosophy: The Essential William James
(Prometheus, 2011) and the Dictionary of Early American Philosophers
(Continuum, 2012). The forthcoming edition of the journal Education and Culture will feature John’s article “Dewey’s Ethical Justification for Public Deliberation Democracy.”

Center for Inquiry Research Fellow Benjamin Radford‘s book Tracking the Chupacabra: The Vampire Beast in Fact, Fiction, and Folklore (University of New Mexico Press, 2011) was recently nominated as a finalist for the New Mexico Book Awards and is currently a finalist for the Book of the Year Award in the social science category. His investigations and analyses recently appeared on Discovery News, MSNBC, The Christian Science Monitor, and National Public Radio.

URGENT: Add your voice to support jailed atheist in Indonesia

In January, Alexander Aan, a 30-year-old in West Sumatra, Indonesia, posted messages to Facebook expressing his lack of belief in God, as well as some satirical cartoons about the prophet Muhammad, and as a result was attacked by an angry mob and then arrested by police under the charge of blasphemy.

The Center for Inquiry needs you to help come to Alexander’s aid.

Alexander did nothing more than exercise the most basic of human rights, his freedom to express his beliefs, and now he is in great jeopardy—not only has he lost his freedom, but many are calling for his death.

CFI wants to make the voices of those who support Alexander loud and clear to the Indonesian government. The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) is organizing a letter-writing campaign on Alexander’s behalf, and we at CFI urge you to take part.

Visit this page to have your say and show your support for Alexander and basic human freedoms. We encourage you to use the text below as your template for you to copy and paste into the web form, but please feel free to add your own thoughts as you see fit. (AHRC has provided its own sample text on its web page, but you can simply remove it and replace it with ours or your own.) Make sure you keep all bracketed text as it is, such as “[salutation],” as it will be automatically filled in once the letter is sent.

Let’s show Alexander and the whole world that we will not be silent when governments suppress, persecute, and jail those who speak their mind.

SUGGESTED TEXT FOR LETTER:

Dear [salutation],
Name of victim: Alexander Aan
Names of alleged perpetrators: Police officers of Pulau Punjung Sub-District Police Station, prosecutors of Sijunjung District Prosecutors Office, potentially the panel of judges at the Muaro Sijunjung District Court who examines Alex’s case.
Date of incident: 18 January 2012 – present (ongoing)
Place of incident: Dharmasraya, Padang, West Sumatra

I am writing to voice my concern regarding the case of Alexander Aan, an atheist civil servant in Dharmasraya, Padang, West Sumatra. Alexander has been arrested and charged with blasphemy and promoting atheism for posting a status on Facebook questioning the existence of God. He is also alleged to have disseminated religious hatred on the Internet by posting a note and comic on Facebook entitled ‘The Prophet Muhammad was attracted to his own daughter-in-law’ and ‘The Prophet Muhammad had been sleeping with his wife’s maid.’

Alexander’s postings were an exercise of free expression of his religious beliefs, and Indonesia is a state party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which guarantees freedom of religion. His posts did not incite, condone, or glorify violence or persecution of anyone, Muslim or otherwise. Though some have found his posts insulting, there is no human right to freedom from feeling offended. Alexander has committed no crime and should be released.

I was alerted to Alexander’s situation by the Center for Inquiry (CFI), a nonprofit organization based in the U.S. that stands for science, reason, and secular values such as the separation of religion from government and the basic freedoms of thought, conscience, and speech. CFI has affiliate organizations and branches all over the world, and holds special consultive status at the United Nations under the UN Economic and Social Council. I stand with CFI in its support of Alexander Aan and of all those who are persecuted for their beliefs—or lack of beliefs—wherever on this planet they reside.

I look forward to your swift action on this matter.

Sincerely,
[fullname]

Jesus, the Easter Bunny, & Other Delusions: Just Say No!

Students, staff, and a curious public will gather at Willamette University in Salem, OR, for a thought-provoking engagement with the ever-controversial Dr. Peter Boghossian.

This Friday, April 27th, in Salem, Oregon, Dr. Peter Boghossian of Portland State University will challenge the conventionally held view that faith-based claims are privileged. Dr. Boghossian reasons that faith-based beliefs are no more than common admissions of ignorance.

Deemed “the Richard Dawkins of Portland” by some, Dr. Boghossian has recently generated intense debate on college campuses, on talk radio, and at dinner tables with the controversial stance that faith-based processes are unreliable and should not receive the respect they currently enjoy in society.

Sam Harris, author of “Letter to a Christian Nation,” writes, “We need more educators like Peter Boghossian.”

Michael Shermer, Founder of the Skeptics Society and Editor in Chief of Skeptic Magazine opines “[Peter Boghossian’s] lecture is one of the best single summaries of how to think clearly I’ve ever seen.”

The presentation is sponsored by Center for Inquiry–Portland, the Oregon branch of Center for Inquiry. The organization promotes science, reason, and secular values through education, outreach, and advocacy.

Harmed by Homeopathy? CFI wants to hear from tou

T he Canadian affiliate of the Center for Inquiry (CFI) recently announced that it is lending its scientific support to assist with a monumental $30 million lawsuit against two Canadian retailers for their peddling of a useless homeopathic product in violation of consumer protection laws. Center for Inquiry supports Unite Women: Rallies Nationwide on April 28

Every day, the news tells us about another move by politicians and interest groups to curtail the rights of women to make their own choices about their health, their bodies, and their day-to-day lives. And without failure, these initiatives are undertaken by those who take their cues from outmoded and archaic notions of women’s roles as dictated by some people’s (usually men’s) interpretations of religious doctrine. It is inescapable.
