The American Government Funds The Polygamist FDLS Sect!

It seems you can’t turn on your TV or visit your favorite internet sites without being bombarded with the latest misadventures of those wacky West Texas polygamists. Because of this, I had resolved to abstain from the redundancy and avoided making comments. However, an article on MiamiHerald.com, shines a light on an outrage that is not being covered by the mainstream press.

Here are some highlights:
“American taxpayers have unwittingly helped finance a polygamist sect that is now the focus of a massive child abuse investigation in West Texas, with a business tied to the group receiving a nearly $1 million loan from the federal government and $1.2 million in military contracts.”

“The ability of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or FLDS, to operate and grow is largely dependent on huge contributions from its members and revenue from the businesses they control…”

“… NewEra Manufacturing in Las Vegas, has been awarded more than $1.2 million in federal government contracts, with most of the money coming in recent years from the Defense Department for wheel and brake components for military aircraft.”

“NewEra, previously known as Western Precision Inc. and located in Hildale, Utah, also received a $900,000 loan in 2005 from the federal Small Business Administration, the data show.”

“In addition, JNJ Engineering, a company owned and operated by FLDS leaders, has made millions of dollars in Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported in September.”

“The company won $11.3 million in contract work from the Las Vegas Valley Water District; all but one of the project workers came from the twin towns of Hildale and Colorado City, Ariz., where most of the sect's 10,000 members live.”

Where is the outrage over these revelations? Why do we continually ignore atrocities that are done under the sheep’s clothing of religion? The US General Services Administration (GSA) has strict regulations for those awarded government contracts. According to the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), there are rules concerning race, gender, and the environment.

All “Hell” would break loose if a CEO was simply accused of doing half the things that were regular practices of Warren Jeffs. Can you imagine what would happen if a judge ordered the removal of 416 children from this CEO’s company? Would they be allowed government contracts?

The evils of the FDLS have been known for years. Several testimonies have been given and books written from escaped members. There are literally hundreds of excommunicated “lost boys” who were expelled simply because they became competition to the older men’s claim to the teenage girls. Still, the government funds their communities.

Apparently, not all polygamous husbands own a chain of hardware stores like Big Love’s Bill Henrickson. Many choose to fleece the government for assistance. According to The Eldorado Success, nearly half of the fundamentalists in Colorado City receive food stamps at a cost of over 3 million dollars a year according to an October 2004 article. Also healthcare dollars through Arizona’s AHCCCS program provided about 8 million dollars a year of aid. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has spent 1.8 million dollars for the paving streets and providing fire departments. During the 2004-2005 school year, $19,866.88 of government money was provided per child in the Colorado City School system.

The cult calls this practice “Bleeding the Beast.” It was practiced by Joseph Smith and his successor Brigham Young. Flora Jessop, who escaped the Colorado City branch, said that members are told to go on welfare because it is a way to get Satan to support God’s work. Why are we okay with this?

Perhaps, I should calm down. Maybe I should instead focus on the glorious first American visit of Pope Benedict XVI. It’s not like his church has any hang-ups with oppressing women and sexually abusing children.

Does Religion Have A Place In American Politics and Government?

If you’re like me, you get sick of important issues being reduced to two minute shouting matches on the evening talk shows. For this reason, I am pleased to bring to your attention, a recent debate which took place at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs. It was part of the National Discussion and Debate Series. The debated resolution was: "Religion should have no place in politics or government." The moderator of the debate was Evan Thomas, Editor at Large of Newsweek.

In Favor of the Resolution:

Rev. Barry Lynn, Executive Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State

Jacques Berlinerblau, Associate Professor and Director of the Program for Jewish Civilization at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service

Apposed to the Resolution:

Chuck Colson, Founder and Chairman of Prison Fellowship Ministries

Bishop Harry Jackson, Senior Pastor of Hope Christian Church

The debate has aired on a few PBS stations around America and will be broadcast on a few others through the next few weeks. It is also available online at the Miller Center Web site. I highly recommend it. (Here)

Toast Appears on Jesus and Pat Robertson Declares War!

Two important items are in the news today.

First, the image of a piece of toast was found on an ancient picture of Jesus Christ:

Second, today Pat Robertson declared another war against nonbelievers. Here's a quote from Robertson's sermon:

"The secularists and atheists are trying to take another religious holiday from God fearing Christians. It was on, or around, April 1st that our Lord rode a holy ass into Jerusalem declaring His Lordship. But, be not fooled, for Jesus had NO intention to establish his Kingdom. He was simply playing the original April Fool's joke.

Join me brothers and sisters, and help me defeat these Hell bound heathens. We must again claim this day for the Kingship of Jesus. It is time to establish the Kingdom of God on Earth as it is in Heaven. This passage of Scripture is simply a metaphor for Believers today. Let God use you. Let Christ ride you. Be Christ's holy ass."

Exposing The Tactics Ben Stein & The Producers of Expelled!

For some reason, this site seems to be read by a lot Christians. Perhaps it is because I used to be a minister; or possibly it is my many references to the Bible. Who knows why? My last post, which was simply my notes from the Expelled press conference (Here), generated quite a bit of email from believers. Many of which believe there are two equally scientific sides in the Evolution/Creation debate.

I would like to bring attention to all (believers and nonbelievers alike), four deceptive tactics being used to promote the movie, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. Inoculated from these, you will be equipped to examine the evidence and make an informed decision.

1. Note the “talking head” double standard.

The hypocrisy of the righteous right’s pundits (Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck and O’Reilly) is blatant. They have all spoke about the glories of this movie. However, they dismissed and discredited Fahrenheit 9/11 and SICKo in their entirety because of Michael Moore’s inequitable tactics. They said his movies were nothing but leftist propaganda. Of course, most of these buffoons bragged about never watching the movies. However, when it comes to Expelled, they cry on and on about critics not focusing on the “issues” presented in the film. They can’t have it both ways.

2. Listen carefully to specific words used.

Second, in the post Clinton era of, “depends on what the definition of is, is,” it is important to pay close attention to the exact words people use in interviews. You will notice that Stein, the Expelled producers, and the talking heads are all careful to use the “Darwinism.” Excuse me, but there is NO theory of Darwinism. They often trick adherers to true science to use this word as well.

There is also no “Theory of Evolution.” Evolution is NOT a theory; it is an observable fact. There is no disputing that life on Earth has progressively evolved from simple to more complex over millions of years. Much like CSI detectives, scientists gather the evidence and construct a theory. The ONLY true theory, so far, is called “Natural Selection.” Again, let’s be careful to choose our words wisely and correct others who misspeak.

In contrast, the word, “Darwinism,” is a philosophical term, as in “Social Darwinism.” Using this phrase, the comparisons between Darwin and Hitler/Stalin are made. Darwin’s name was clearly used by these despots to justify their racist ethnic cleansing; however, their ilk was in practice long before Charles Darwin.

Here are some important excerpts from a Wikipedia article about social Darwinism:

“Despite the fact that social Darwinism bears Darwin's name and his works were widely read by social Darwinists, the theory also draws on the work of many authors, including Herbert Spencer, Thomas Malthus, and Francis Galton, the founder of eugenics. Darwin himself gave serious consideration to Galton's work, but thought the ideas of "hereditary improvement" impractical. Aware of weaknesses in his own family, he was sure that families would naturally refuse such selection and wreck the scheme. He thought that even if compulsory registration was the only way to improve the human race, this illiberal idea would be unacceptable, and it would be better to publicize the "principle of inheritance" and let people decide for themselves.[2] In The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex of 1882 he described how medical advances meant that the weaker were able to survive and have families, and commented on the effects of this, while cautioning that hard reason should not override sympathy, and considering how other factors might reduce the effect”

Herbert Spencer's ideas, like those of evolutionary "progressivism", stemmed from his reading of Thomas Malthus, and his later theories were influenced by those of Darwin. However, Spencer's major work, Progress: Its Law and Cause (1857) was released two years before the publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species, and First Principles was printed in 1860. In regards to social institutions, there is a good case that Spencer's writings might be classified as 'social Darwinism'. He argues that the individual (rather than the collectivity) is the unit of analysis that evolves, that evolution takes place through natural selection, and that it affects social as well as biological phenomena.

In many ways Spencer's theory of "cosmic evolution" has much more in common with the works of Lamarck and Auguste Comte's positivism work than Darwin. Darwin's theory is concerned with populations, whereas Spencer's deals with the way an individual's motives influence humanity. Darwin's theory is probabilistic, i.e., based on changes in the environment that sooner or later influence the change of individuals in a collective sense, but do not have any single, specific goal. Spencer's is deterministic (the evolution of human society is the only logical consequence of its previous stage), fatalistic (it cannot be influenced by human actions), universalistic (social evolution follows a single path, it cannot skip or change any stages) and teleological (there is a final, perfect society that will be eventually reached). Darwin's theory does not equal progress, except in the sense that the new, evolved species will be better suited to their changing environment. Spencer's theory introduces the concept of social progress—the new, evolved society is always better than the past.”

I would also like to point out that much of the Hitler/Darwin comparisons in Expelled were plagiarized from a much better movie made by Dr. James Kennedy and his Coral Ridge Ministries. I think they should sue.

3. Listen carefully to the words not being used.

Ben Stein has been careful not to argue the fact of evolution. In fact, he does what many IDers have done, and creates two different types of evolution: micro and macro evolution. Microevolution, which Stein acknowledges, accepts there has been “adaptation” within species (i.e. Great Danes to Chihuahuas). Macroevolution, which Stein denies, is the adaptation of one species into another.

In many interviews, Stein changes the focus to the fact that Darwinian Evolutionists don’t have a good explanation on how life began. That’s because natural selection has nothing to do with the origin of life. It only theorizes how life progressed once it appeared. The theory of how life began is called “Abiogenesis.”

To digress a bit, believers in Biblical account of creation believe there was a lot more evolution than any “Darwinian” biologist. They proclaim that all variety of life within species occurred in the 4,000 years since Captain Stubing’s—I mean Noah’s boat ride. This is light speed compared to biologists who believe it took 12,000 years to get the variety of dogs alive today. Perhaps the Ark really was the Love Boat.

4. Notice the misappropriation of rights of free speech.

The forth and final point may be the most important. Stein and company continually try to focus the attention onto the rights of “Free Speech.” In the much publicized teleconference, it was pointed out that the Expelled movie was not attempting to disprove Darwin or prove any other argument. They simply felt it was important to let silenced scientists speak freely.

The issue is not about yelling fire in a crowed theater. The issue is true science. Only an idiot would not acknowledge the continual arguments and debates among scientists. In fact, part of the beauty of the scientific method, is the necessity of dispute. The fact is that NO ONE has ever presented or published (in scientific journals) a different theory of how life progressed on earth (evolution). NO ONE! IDers only point to gaps, misunderstandings, and past errors to castigate natural selection. I assure you that if anyone ever presented a falsifiable theory that disproves natural selection, they would not only be embraced by all scientists, they would win the Nobel Prize. So far their theories have been so bad that there not even wrong.

My Notes From Expelled Movie Press Conference! PZ Myers Crashed It!

Below are my notes taken from the “invitation only” press teleconference for the movie: Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.

For the sake of time, I am not taking the time to edit the notes. So forgive me if something does not make sense or I use bad grammar. I may even attribute a quote to the wrong person. Also, to avoid confusion, I will try to put my comments in parenthesis. I have a lot more I would like to say, but I will save it for another post. The purpose of this post is simply to get the facts out.

Begin Teleconference:

Introduction was given by Paul Lower. He was also the marketer for: The Chronicle of Narnia and Mel Gibson’s, Passion of The Christ.

Comment is made that according to Blog Pulse. The movie is the number one topic in the blogosphere.

The producers state that the purpose of the movie is to reveal what has become a modern day witch hunt. That many scientists are being fired because they simply question Darwin’s theories.

They also speak of the social implications of Darwinism and blame it as one of the causes for Hitler and Nazism.

Ben Stein is asked what he would say to his fans who question whether or not he has lost his mind. “Yeah I probably lost my mind a long time ago. Probably in 1958.” Everyone laughs.

Stein challenges that anyone show him any evidence for Macroevolution. They he clarifies it and says mammalian evolution (Sorry Tiktaalik).

One of the producers says that the goal of this movie is not to disprove Darwin or to prove any other theory. It is to show that scientists don’t have free speech.

Stein says that he thinks Darwinism is politics masquerading as science.

They dealt quickly with the accusations being made by scientists in the movie. First is the claim that the interviews were conducted under false pretenses. They say that this is not the case. All in the film signed releases. (This is the same disclaimer given by the producers of Borat).

Stein points out that you can’t be misquoted if you make your statements on film. (No mention on how film can be edited or the use of cutting other visuals into the film)

They speak of Dawkins trying to deny his belief in panspermia. They say he says it could be an, “intriguing possibility.” They also infer that this is Dawkins saying that Intelligent Design is possible.

Producer Mark Mathis said that all the complaints about the film are just side elements and diversions. They have nothing to do with the truth in the film. All the complaints are non-issues.

Someone asked Stein about him stating that he is not like Michael Moore. Stein says that the movie should have contained more about Darwinism and Nazi Germany. He thought the producers used extreme restraint.

Another Producer, Logan said that Darwinists who resist and fight the Hitler comparison are guilty of their own form of holocaust denial.

The question is asked if Darwinism leads to Nazism.

Stein says no, but that Nazi’s thought they were fulfilling Darwin’s goals.

Stein also comments on eugenics and selective breeding. He says it was inspired by Darwin and used to reduce the Negro population.

The question is asked about Dawkins and Myers and their reports on Myers being “expelled” from the movie.

Mathis says that the screenings are “invitation only.” (However, you could get tickets on their website).

Mathis says they knew Myers and Dawkins were going to attend the screening and decided to make an example of Myers. This is because Myers is an outspoken proponent of firing scientist that question Darwin. He also points out that Dawkins signed in under the name “Clinton Dawkins,” but they let him in anyway.

Mathis again points out that these arguments are not the important issues. They have nothing to do with the facts of the content of the movie. He also points out that he had a personal grudge against Myers and he wanted him to have to pay for the movie. He points out that he let Michael Shermer attend another viewing and that Shermer enjoyed the film.

Stein says these complaints are just red herrings. Does the movie make since or not?

Mathis says that after the incident, Dawkins thought he was profound for asking why Myers was “expelled” from the movie. Mathis said he thought, “Is that the best you got?” He was amazed that Dawkins didn’t have any comments on the facts of the movie. He had just been delivered a devastating blow to his thoughts and career.

Stein points out that Dawkins knew who he was. (I guess this is a response to Dawkins’ saying he was unaware of his American popularity).

Then out of the blue, PZ Meyers crashed the party. I am not sure how he was able to speak. We were told that everyone was muted. The producers stumbled a bit and it was quite amusing.

The producers state that he is uninvited and not welcome. Myers states that he wanted to confront them for lying. They interrupt him and again say he is guilty of evasive tactics.

Myers points out that long before Martin Luther, anti-Semitism was present in the world. That Jews had been killed for years before Darwin. He accused the producers of trivializing history. (I would have liked to ask what they thought of Gibson's Jesus movie and it being based on "passion plays" which were used to kill Jews).

Myers was told to be silent. He was told to do the honorable thing and be quiet. He could listen and if they had a question they would ask him. Myers said they were being dishonorable and lying. Myers then left the conversation and said that any reporters that wanted to talk to him could email him. He gave his email address.

Once Myers was off the line, one of the producers acted disappointed and wanted to take all Myer’s complaints and knock them down one by one.

Ironically they again discuss freedom of speech.

The producers said that their film was having an impact in the political arena. They held a screening in Florida for lawmakers. They discussed the Academic Freedom Bill that Florida is considering.

The question is asked, if the issue are just about science than why are so many Darwinists upset? Why do they have such passionate anger? Mathis says that Darwinism is a worldview. Scientists like Myers and Dawkins are scared because their atheistic worldview might come crashing down on their heads.

The final “soft ball” question is asked, “What do we do next to help make a change.”

Logan (another producer) says that people needed to support the film. They need to go see it. It is a very important priority. (Selling tickets perhaps?)

Mathis asks why we are letting science be controlled by these Doctrinaire Materialists. Do we want to hand over the creation of the world to a world view like atheism? Let your views be know to legislators. Scientists should not be persecuted for asking questions. Hopefully, even if someone has an atheist view, they should ask maybe there is something there.

Mathis closed by saying the expelled scientist need legal protection. They need to get funding so they can investigate their ideas (let’s compare the money the Discovery Institute raises and compare).

End Teleconference.

Boy, I have a lot of things I would like to say. I'll save them for another time.

Or, you could look at it another way, Even Satan knew the Bible. He used it to tempt Jesus.

Obama Double Standard Continued: McCain and Rod Parsley

In last week’s article, The Obama Double Standard (Here), I neglected to mention one of the more wacky endorsers of John McCain, the wonderful Rev. Rod Parsley. Since his endorsement of McCain was before the Rev. Wright fiasco, it is easy to see how I missed it.

I am sure many of you have seen Rev. Parsley standing in the background during one of McCain’s speeches. In the below video, taken from a February rally, McCain refers to Rev. Parsley as, "a moral compass and a spiritual guide.”

Now before we delve further into Rev. Parsley’s religious and political views, let me give some credit to Keith Olbermann and play a clip from his show, Countdown:

Since America is at war with Islamic terrorists, do we really want a President who would accept an endorsement from this "Reverend?" Is there any doubt that Rev. Parsley’s words could be used by the Muslim world as proof of being in a “religious” war with the US? Could these words not be used to recruit new jihadists? What about this picture of Rev. Parsley holding the Sword of God’s Word?

Could this inspire memories of the Crusades? On page 50 of his best selling book, Silent No More, Rev. Parley says of the Muslim faith, "The fact is that America was founded, in part, with the intention of seeing this false religion destroyed."

Just in case you think that Rev. Parsley's venom is only directed at our enemies abroad, watch this video:

I searched the internet for this entire speech. I saw it when it was originally broadcast. He preaches that there is a war in America being fought between God's army (Christians) and Satan's army (The rest of us).

In this next video, Rev. Parsley equates Planned Parenthood with the KKK and Nazis. He also declares abortion to be an attempt to exterminate black people.

Oh, and we can't forget about the sexual deviancy of the homosexuals. On page 76 of, Silent No More, Rev. Parsley says, "Even without AIDS, the homosexual community is sick and dying." Here's another video:

Where is the McCain/Parsley controversy? Isn't it, at the very least, as sensational as the Obama/Wright story? Could there really be a double standard in America; and it due to Obama's race or his political affiliation?

I ask you—dear friends—to help me make this an issue. Do as I have done and contact the media outlets. Contact your friends. Send them a link to this article and have them contact the media. Demand that they cover this story. If you really want to be nasty, call the McCain campaign and demand that McCain denounce and deny Rev. Parsley (and Rev. Hagee). Here's their phone number: (703) 418-2008.

In 2001, Rev. Parsley told the Columbus Dispatch the following, "Americans must be Christocrats, citizens of both their Country and the Kingdom of God. And that is not a democracy, that is a theocracy." With this quote in mind, watch this segment of a video made by Equality Ohio. This group was formed in response to Rev. Parsley's 28 million dollar political action group, Reformation Ohio.

To my theist readers, I ask you to email me again why this is no big deal. NO ONE in America would ever allow ANYONE to declare war against your beliefs. Why are you letting it be done to us?

Say Goodnight Hal: Arthur C. Clarke Dead At 90

Brothers and Sisters,

I would like you all to join me in a moment of silence...

Today we morn the loss and celebrate the life of Arthur C. Clarke. Yes, the distinguished science fiction author is no longer among the living. Wednesday, he breathed his last breath in his adopted home of Sri Lanka. Brother Clarke was among the living for 90 years.

Clarke may be best known as the co-writer of "2001: A Space Odyssey." However, he had also written over a hundred other novels and short stories. He is also credited with creating the concept of communications satellites. This is why geosynchronous orbits are called “Clarke Orbits.”

More than his great writing, we need to ponder the life of Clarke because he was an outspoken atheist. We are indebted to pioneers like Clarke. His ability to take complex scientific concepts and present them in an easily understandable manner, helped lay the groundwork for worldwide acceptance for the beauty and awe of our mysterious Universe.

Though Brother Arthur did not deem it necessary to construct a facade of solace by believing in a superstitious afterlife, he will live eternally—in us—through the philosophy of his writings.

Take a moment to contemplate the following ten quotes from the Canon of Clarke:

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

“God doesn't exist at all or if he does exist he exists as per these limitations; he is either all-powerful or merciful. However the cannot be both. If God exists, he is ignorant of mankind or doesn't care about him one bit. Even if God existed, he is more evil than good."

“It may be that our role on this planet is not to worship God, but to create him.”
“Religion is a byproduct of fear. For much of human history, it may have been a necessary evil, but why was it more evil than necessary? Isn't killing people in the name of God a pretty good definition of insanity?"

"I do not believe in God, but I do not disbelieve in her either." If anybody can confirm this and provide a date of the interview, please send it in. Thanks.
“Science can destroy a religion by ignoring it as well as by disproving its tenets. No one ever demonstrated, so far as I am aware, the nonexistence of Zeus or Thor, but they have few followers now.”

“I would defend the liberty of consenting adult creationists to practice whatever intellectual perversions they like in the privacy of their own homes; but it is also necessary to protect the young and innocent.”

“A faith that cannot survive collision with the truth is not worth many regrets.”
“The statement that God created man in his own image is ticking like a time bomb in the foundations of Christianity.”

“I have encountered a few creationists and because they were usually nice, intelligent people, I have been unable to decide whether they were really mad, or only pretending to be mad. If I was a religious person, I would consider creationism nothing less than blasphemy. Do its adherents imagine that God is a cosmic hoaxer who has created that whole vast fossil record for the sole purpose of misleading mankind?”

Barack Obama The AntiChrist?

Somehow this post was deleted from the site. Apologies to the Subscribers if this is a repeat.

In response to my "Obama Double Standard" article (Here), someone emailed me a link to this website: Barack Obama the Antichrist?

At first reading, I thought for sure that it was a joke. I was hoping it was a joke. Guess what? It's not! I laughed, like I'm sure you did, when Glenn Beck asked John Hagee if Obama was the Anti-Christ. Little did I know that some people actually think he is! And apparently Nostradamus even predicted it. The Obama Double Standard? Take Heed Limbaugh, Hannity, & O’Reilly

The controversy concerning Barack Obama’s Pastor has revealed more than the appalling sermons of Rev. Jeremiah Wright. It has once again uncovered the obvious double standard so prevalent this election season. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Bill O’Reilly have dedicated entire shows to using Rev. Wright’s words to disqualify Obama for the Presidency.

Before I proceed further, let me make it clear that I believe Rev. Wright’s words to be bigoted and detestable. Below is a clip of these statements:

Now I don’t claim to understand the plight of being black in America, but there is no justification for these horrible statements. They are despicable and I agree with the “Righteous Right” that they should be denounced by Obama. He has been a member of Rev. Wright’s church for many years and owes the American people an explanation.

Yesterday (March 14, 2008) Barack Obama wrote a very clear denouncement of Rev. Wright’s statements. It was published by The Huffington Post, and was a stronger rejection than the one he gave Minister Louis Farrakhan. Below are some excerpts:

The pastor of my church, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who recently preached his last sermon and is in the process of retiring, has touched off a firestorm over the last few days. He's drawn attention as the result of some inflammatory and appalling remarks he made about our country, our politics, and my political opponents.

Let me say at the outset that I vehemently disagree and strongly condemn the statements that have been the subject of this controversy. I categorically denounce any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies. I also believe that words that degrade individuals have no place in our public dialogue, whether it's on the campaign stump or in the pulpit. In sum, I reject outright the statements by Rev. Wright that are at issue.

Let me repeat what I've said earlier. All of the statements that have been the subject of controversy are ones that I vehemently condemn. They in no way reflect my attitudes and directly contradict my profound love for this country.

I’m satisfied and think we should take Obama at his word. Similar accusations were made against John F. Kennedy due to his affiliation with the Catholic Church. Kennedy made his denouncement—as he should have—and it was satisfactory for most Americans. Here’s his clip:

So where is the double standard I alluded to you might ask?

I ask you, did Limbaugh and Hannity dedicate entire shows repudiating Mitt Romney due to the Mormon Church’s racist views against our darker skin brothers and sisters? No. In fact, it was proclaimed to be a violation of Romney’s first amendment rights. It was bigotry to even question his association. However, until 1978 black people could not become priests in the Mormon Church. The church taught that dark skin was the “mark” given to Cain for killing his brother Abel. Mormon’s were also taught that God allowed black people to survive Noah’s flood so there could be a balance between good and evil. Black people were Satan’s representatives on Earth. This bigotry and racism was much worse than that of Rev. Wright, for it heaped condemnation beyond the grave. It had “eternal” consequences! Watch this clip:

When it was revealed that Billy Graham made anti-Semitic statements in a private conversation with Richard Nixon, did anyone demand Graham no longer associate with Presidents? Of course not, he is still called “America’s Pastor,” and has counseled every President since. Again, watch the clip for the double standard:

Many conservatives have credited Jerry Falwell and his “moral majority” for the election of Ronald Reagan. When he and Pat Robertson made their despicable remarks concerning September 11th, the media brought attention to their lunacy, but did anyone use it to disavow Reagan’s legacy? Did anyone demand that the “conservative movement” reject these buffoons? Of course not, they forgave Falwell because he said that he was tired when he made his Biblically sound and disgusting statements. Here’s the video:

When Pat Robertson endorsed Rudy Giuliani, did the “talking heads” scream and demand that Giuliani deny and denounce all the idiotic and evil sermons of Rev. Robertson? No, Giuliani and Robertson held this press conference:

Recently, theist wacko John Hagee gave his endorsement to John McCain. There was very little condemnation in the press, and the “Righteous Right” was satisfied with McCain’s statement that the endorsement didn’t mean that he (McCain) supported every thing Hagee believed. This apparently was enough for Limbaugh and Hannity, so they didn’t need to dedicate much time to this fiasco.

John Hagee has preached for years that the Catholic Church is the “Great Whore” in the book of Revelation. His demand that America support Israel’s refusal to surrender any land, has given support to radical Jewish extremists and has contributed to the hatred in the Middle East. Hagee even clearly blamed the Katrina hurricane on the New Orleans homosexuals and their planned "Gay Parade." If you watch no others, watch this clip:

I think the double standard is very clear. ALL of these delusional theists should be condemned and denounced. And while we’re at it, let’s condemn the original terroristic threat—damnation and Hellfire. Since the beginning of time, theists, whether they are Christian, Jewish, or Muslim, have terrorized the world with threats of God’s wrath. It is not enough that they disagree with other’s policies or views. They claim to know the mind of God. They declare that those who disagree with them are not only wrong, but will be tormented for all eternity. There is no chance for parole from this torture. People will not be judged for say 1,000 years for each sin. No they will be roasted forever. This makes being water boarded in Quantanamo Bay seem like a trip to Disney Land.

What has snapped in the delusional mind that finds the atrocity of Hell acceptable? How could anyone ever enjoy paradise fully aware that members of their family and friends are being agonized with "weeping and gnashing of teeth." It doesn’t matter if they are murderers, rapists or simply liars. All who don’t accept God’s “love” get the same sentence. Still, otherwise loving theists gleefully pray, “Come quickly, Lord Jesus.”

I for one, denounce, deny, and condemn this evil in ALL its guises. It is time to hold ALL irrational bigots accountable for their beliefs and the statements of their ministers. In America, you have the right to be a bigot and a racist. You have a right to religious freedom. However, you are not entitled to respect. If you proclaim your beliefs in the public square (as is your right), you are not protected from ridicule and disdain. We are ALL accountable for our words and those of our leaders. In the words of Rush Limbaugh, “Words mean things!”

Richard Dawkins Video from UW Madison

As a follow up to yesterday's article discussing Richard Dawkins' lecture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Pratha Muthiah wrote a review of the speech in the Badger Herald.

Here are a few excerpts:
According to Dawkins, belief in the supernatural is a delusion and only the workings of nature can be considered divine. Dawkins described the idea of the “Supreme Watchmaker” — the argument that the intricacy of the universe necessitates a maker just as a watch does — as “one of the most superficial, plausible, bad arguments against Darwin.”
Dawkins said religion can be replaced with science, since scientific study can effectively satisfy the same psychological need religion is said to fill.

When asked what one message he wanted students to walk away with after Tuesday’s lecture, Dawkins said it was the importance of evidence and thinking for oneself.

“Think critically for yourself,” Dawkins said. “Don’t believe what people tell you unless they give you the evidence. What is the evidence? How do you know what you’re being told is true? Is it from faith, revelation or scripture? If it’s any of those things, forget it. Always go for evidence.”

The Inspirational Richard Dawkins Speaks Tonight!

Corey Sheahan, history and economics senior at University of Wisconsin-Madison wrote a great op-ed piece today in his school’s newspaper, The Badger Herald. In it he extends an invitation for all students to attend this evening’s (March 11, 2008) lecture by Richard Dawkins.

Here are the first two paragraphs of the article:
Tonight, University of Wisconsin welcomes professor Richard Dawkins to our campus as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series. Mr. Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist, is best known in this country for his best-selling work, “The God Delusion.” I will be attending the lecture tonight, and I whole-heartedly encourage everyone — religious and non-religious people alike — to attend as well.

While Mr. Dawkins is best known as an atheist, I suspect that if you asked him, the word “atheist’” would not be the first term he would use to describe himself. If you get anything from his lecture tonight, I hope you recognize that Mr. Dawkins is not a nihilist, out to promote despair and desolation. “The God Delusion” is an explicit attack on religion, but in his earlier works — “The Blind Watchmaker,” “Climbing Mount Improbable” and especially “Unweaving the Rainbow” — Mr. Dawkins reveals he is most interested in understanding the wonder and majesty of the universe.

I wanted to bring this article to your attention for two reasons. First, I wanted to help get the word out about the Dawkins lecture. Second, I really admire the way Sheahan delivers his invitation. He doesn’t slap his fellow theists in the face; he put emphasis on Dawkins’ ability to inspire awe in the Universe. We should all try this tactic. We are often just like the “Bible thumpers.” We are often “Darwin thumpers!”

I’m sure many will disagree, but I have always thought of Dawkins as a mix between Carl Sagan and Mr. Rogers. Every time he speaks of the complexity of the Universe, he puts me in awe. My jaw drops every time he discusses the beauty of evolution. I am usually confused when people speak of him as mean and nasty. I guess they feel this way simply because they disagree with him. Unlike the late Stephen Jay Gould, Dawkins doesn't allow theists to hide behind the myth of “Nonoverlapping Magisteria.”

Writing this, I am reminded of one of my favorite Sagan quotes, “In some respects, science has far surpassed religion in delivering awe. How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, "This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed"? Instead they say, "No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way."

What else is there to say but, Amen!

Understanding Primate Evolution Could Aid HIV Research

Yesterday my brother asked me a question I get asked all the time. He asked me, "What does it matter if people don’t believe in evolution?" Like most people his age, my brother is pretty neutral when it comes to things of religion. He has the philosophy "live and let live," and for the most part--I agree with him. However, to continue beating the same dead horse, I think it really does matter whether people accept the FACT of evolution (the THEORY is Natural Selection) or not.

I won't ramble to much because I know I’m mostly preaching to the “atheist choir” here. I just want to bring your attention to a study submitted for peer review to the National Academy of Sciences. I know you intelligent design theists haven’t heard of “peer review.” Click HERE to read about it.

The study basically reveals that our understanding of primate evolution could aid in our research of HIV. Here are the first and last paragraphs of an article about it from Sciencedaily.com:
Evolution moves in fits and starts, shaping species through random genetic mutations that can help them survive or even hasten their death. But although the mutations occur by chance, the process can create surprisingly similar results. Now, in a startling twist, new research has provided an example in which evolution didn’t just result in similar outcomes — it actually repeated itself, occurring the same way twice. Scientists at Rockefeller University and the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center have shown that nearly the exact same mutation occurred twice, in two monkey species that live on opposite sides of the world from each other. And while the change evolved independently in each case, in both species it plays a distinct role in how the animals fend off disease.

What surprised the researchers even more is that TRIMcyp is present in monkey species that evolved on different continents. Pigtail macaques live primarily in Southeast Asia, owl monkeys only in Central and South America. “This indicates that an intuitively unlikely evolutionary event occurred not only once but twice, in two primate species separated by 35 or so million years of evolution,” Bieniasz says. “This is a remarkable example of evolutionary convergence, and it underscores the potent selection pressure that can be applied by retroviruses.” Not only that, but their finding has the potential to guide researchers toward an effective animal model of HIV infection — something the field currently lacks.

You see? It really does matter! A creation scientist educated in the many theist colleges would have never stumbled on such information. If we don't stand up and fight now, we will return to the Dark Ages! The below chart says it all.

Does Order In The Universe Provide Evidence of God?

ABC News columnist, John Allen Paulos, writer of “Irreligion,” has written a wonderful article about the supposed order of the universe. He writes that many believers of creation science use this perceived order as evidence of a creator god. They ask, “How can this order and complexity arise out of nothing?” He points out that they use this argument while ignoring the question of how this ultra-complex being came into existence.

Here is an excerpt:
Because the seemingly inexplicable arising of order seems to be so critical to so many, however, I've decided to list here a few other sources for naturally occurring order in physics, math, and biology. Of course, order, complexity, entropy, randomness and related notions are clearly and utterly impossible to describe and disentangle in a column like this, but the examples below from "Irreligion" hint at some of the abstract ideas relevant to the arising of what has been called "order for free."

Paulos goes on to list three examples under the headings: Necessarily Some Order, Ramsey Order, and Self-Organization and Order. All of which provide excellent ammunition for our ongoing fight against the ID theists.

American’s are Losing Their Religion…Thank God!

According to a new Pew Forum study, nearly half of American adults forsake the religion of their upbringing. While many of the 35,000 surveyed simply switch religious affiliation, several abandoned organized religion altogether.

The study concluded that all religious demographics were gaining and losing membership. However, those who claim no religious affiliation had the most growth with three-to-one margins. While those labeling themselves as atheist or agnostic was only 4.0 percent, those who described themselves as having no religious association was 12.1 percent.

Check out the survey results: (Here).

Watch Pew Forum Director Luis Lugo discuss the survey below:

Just think if we could organize simply half of that 16.1 percent. We are a larger group of voters than the Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, and Historically Black Churches combined!

Any thoughts on how we can get over that “cat herding” thing?

Pat Robertson’s Producer and Cocaine?

In May of 2006, Theist broadcaster Pat Robertson claimed that he could leg-press 2,000 pounds (Article). Most experts said it was impossible. However, Robertson claimed that part of his strength came from his special vitamins and nutritional shakes (which he sold through his tax-exempt ministry). (Article)

Well, it seems that we may now know what those “special vitamins” were. On Monday’s 700 Club, Robertson revealed that his producer's strength came from the ingestion of “paste of cocoa.” In case we might be confused, he said, “Not cocoa like hot chocolate, but cocoa like cocaine.” He went on to say, "As I understand, the distribution of cocaine and its derivatives are against the law."

Intellegent Design Should Be Ridiculed!

If you haven't done so already check out this great post from "The Green Atheist:"

Why Do People Laugh at Creationists?

These 11 videos do a great job crucifying the glib arguments ID Theists use against evolution. I've preached before (Here), that we can now only win this fight by ridiculing the opposition. There is NO debate.

FACTS:

1. Evolution is a fact, the explanatory theory is called "Natural Selection." This is why the IDers now use the word "Darwinism" not evolution.

2. Intelligent Design is NOT a Scientific Theory. It is so bad that it's not even wrong!

3. The Theory of Evolution is not about how life began, but how it progressed once it began. The science of HOW life began, is called Abiogenesis.

4. There is no difference between Macro-Evolution and Micro-Evolution. You can not have one without the other. Sorry Kirk Cameron, there are NO scientists looking for a croc-o-duck! You idiot.

5. We have found literally millions of missing links and transitional fossils.

I will stop the list at five. I have a Father Daughter Dance tonight.

Who Would Darwin Vote For? Clinton, Obama, McCain, Huckabee?

I consider myself an independent. I am somewhat libertarian, but usually end up voting Republican. Mainly because they are the guys pushing for a smaller government. So, like most conservative non-believers, I hold my nose and pull the lever (yes kiddies, there use to be levers) for an irrational theist.

For the first time in my adult life, I voted in the Georgia primary for a democrat. I voted for Barack Obama. Yes, I know he lacks experience. Yes, I know he is the most liberal of the candidates. I debated all this myself.

When I was looking at the candidates, and thinking about my past votes, it became clear that it didn't really matter who was in the White House. They all ended up pretty much the same. Except in one area, their appointments to the Supreme Court.

If Bush Sr. (who I voted for) would have been reelected in 1992 we would no longer have a Supreme Court that valued the separation of church and state. America would be quite a bit different than it is today. Bill Clinton, whether you like him or not, replaced White with Ginsburg and Blackmun with Breyer, preserving our civil liberties.

Today, there sits on the Supreme Court four Roman Catholics with religious presuppositions, and five Justices who fight to uphold our secular government. There is a very good chance that the next President, whoever that may be, will have the opportunity to appoint one, if not two, Judges. The influence of these appointments will long outlast those of the President himself (or herself).

With the above in mind, here is how I judged each of the five now running for President:

Republicans
1. John McCain: Though better than most Rebuplicans, he has said that America is a Christian nation.

2. Mike Huckabee: Do I need to even discuss him. He denies the fact of evolution and he says we should change the Constitution to agree with the Bible.

3. Ron Paul: I really like him. I agree with about 90% of what he says. However, there is no way, at this point, he is going to win. Also, it could be argued that he is somewhat of a Christian Nationalist.

Democrats
1. Hilary Clinton: Even though she is Methodist, I have no doubt that she would choose Judges in support of our civil liberties. However, I believe she is to polarizing of a candidate and might not be able to beat McCain.

2. Barack Obama: He is a member of the Church of Christ, which is a very liberal church. His father was a Muslim who later became an Atheist, and his mother was Christian, who was somewhat skeptical. He no doubt would support religious and non-religious freedoms.

It was the below speech that helped me make my final decision. I hope you all would take a moment to watch it, It is about 40 minutes but very worth your time (especially if you are on the fence about for whom to vote). Though clearly, defining himself as Christian, he takes several strong position on church and state separation.

There’s Hope for America, If We Follow Britain’s Example

The web site, timesonline.co.uk, is reporting the results of a recent poll, concerning God and religion. The poll was commissioned by broadcaster and writer, John Humphrys, reported that nearly half (42%) of the 2,200 British polled, feel that religion is harmful. Almost in contrast, the poll also stated that half of the population believes in God “or something.” The numbers broke down as follows: “Only 16% of those polled called themselves atheists; 28% believed in God; 26% believed in “something” but were not sure what; and 9% regarded themselves as agnostics.”

Excerpts:
He (writes: “Even though the dominant faith - by a massive margin – is Christianity, only 17% thought the influence of religion was beneficial. That is even fewer than those who claim that they believe in a personal God. And yet when we asked which of the main religions was ‘most effective’ in getting its message across, most thought it was Christianity. Only 10% cited Islam compared with 32% who said Christianity.”

In the survey 43% said they never prayed, 31% hardly prayed, and 10% prayed every night. “More than half of those who say they believe in a personal God cannot be bothered to pray to him every night,” writes Humphrys. (Full Article)

I would love to see a poll done in America with specific questions like this. We use the word “God” so generically. It means so many different things to so many different people. It is like the word “love.” I love popcorn; I love movies; I love my wife; and I love my friends. I in no way love these things—and people—equally, but we use the same words.
When Americans say they believe in God, what does that actually mean? People need to be educated on what they truly should call themselves. Do you really know how to define yourself? You could be an atheist, an agnostic, a deist, a theist, a pantheist, a naturalist, a bright, skeptic, etc. It is important to figure it out. Only when we know how to define ourselves, will we be able to start the dialogue with our fellow mammals.
