Hitchens and D’Souza Go At It Again

Christopher Hitchens and Dinesh D'Souza go head to head again. Always good to see the verbal lashings that Hitchens gives out, not too good seeing D'Souza regurgitate the same tired old arguments. So if you have 2 hours to spare and want to watch Christopher Hitchens do what he does best then this video is just up your street.

BLASPHEMY – RENDERING

My contribution from the bus slogan generator webpage:

That is all.

EDIT:  Dude!  I just realized that there's a real synergy between the contents of the bottom line and the colors used to render them - 'turn off that red light' is written in red, and 'kneel before superman' is rendered in yellow... like the light of the strength-enhancing YELLOW SUN?  Oh yeah.

Carnival Of The Godless #110 and #111

It appears that I've been slacking a bit again and almost missed another couple of Carnivals of The Godless. Well, let's put that right straight away. Carnival of The Godless #110 is on display at The Greenbelt and Carnival of The Godless #111 is hot off the presses at The Atheist Blogger. The upside of my belated posting of course is that I now have double Godlessness to keep me occupied for a few hours. Get your arse over there and join me.

What are you waiting for?

April Fools in Feb

I was wondering how long it was going to take before The Atheist Spot received anti-atheist comments and/or story submissions. Check out the comments under this story:

ATHEIST DAY: April 1st. (April Fool's Day)

THOSE WHOM GOD CALLS FOOLS

The fool says in his heart,

"There is no God." (Psalm 14:1).

For the message of the cross is foolishness

to those who are perishing,....(1 Cor. 1:18).

You fools, when will you become wise?

(Psalm 94:8).

It's the first time I heard an "Atheist Day" and April Fools associated with one another. This would have had much more impact on April 1st. It was a little premature, but at least I know to look out for this stuff on April Fools.

Thou Shalt Not Kill (or was that Commit Murder?)

I found it interesting to learn that the Ten Commandments are not really ten at all. According to Wikipedia, there are 14 or 15 commandments (which would explain this clip).

It would seem that different denominations have decided to create their own version of the Ten Commandments which doesn't hold well to the idea that these Commandments are absolutes, as Christians try so hard to portray.

My favourite is the 'Thou Shall Not Kill" or "Thou Shall Not Murder". It turns out that Catholics prefer 'Kill' and Lutherans, 'Murder'. So, which is it?

Killing and murder are not the same thing. It's a matter of intention. Let's say I'm driving my car and I swerve to avoid a deer. As a result, I go into the opposing lane, crash into an oncoming car, and kill the driver. I have now killed and go to Catholic Hell, or do I go to Lutheran Heaven? It's all so confusing.

BLASPHEMY – EDICT

A moderate Christian named Lyn posted a comment on a blog post at irrelgion.org earlier today, and the reply I gave deserves a space at Prose Justice, so I'm reproducing it here.  The original post features a youtube clip of President Obama being particularly level-headed* regarding the role of religious thinking in public policy.  It's worth a quick view.

So, without further ado:

Lyn Says:

I have a question, why do athiest need to form groups and organizations just so they can say they don’t believe in something? If in your opinion God doesn’t exist, then why this site? Why spend so much time fighting something you don’t believe in? Why fight a God and his followers if he is nothing more than a figment of believers imaginations? I know if I don’t believe in something I am not going to waste time fighting it. I myself believe in God and I saw on this site a little sketch about the earth being only 6,000 years old and we all know that can not be true. There is nothing in the Bible that confirms that. In fact it reveals quite the opposite in Genesis. But people, epecially ‘Bible Beating’ Christians never take the time to see what is actually being said and they also fail to understand that the Bible was translated from greek to english. This means that the meanings they have for word and phrases are different. For example, in the greek ’serpent’ meant ‘Shining One’ not snake as it means in english. Who is referred to in the Bible as the ‘Shining One’, Satan. Another thing that I saw was a comment on the Sabbath Day. The Sabbath day can be any day of the week. I usually take mine on a Friday because I am free all day, no school or work for me. When people continually work everyday, all day they become shell of human beings. No one can function correctly unless they take a break. People will actually work themselves to death. They sentence themselves to death, just like drug addicts, alcoholics, etc. Is God doing this or are people doing it to themselves? I tend to go with the latter. As far as the war that is going on in the middle east, that itself can be traced back to the Bible. Ishmael and Isaac are still fighting til this day over their fathers land. They are feuding brothers who most likely will never be at peace. Like yourselves I am also irritated with some ‘Christians’. Irritated because they don’t take the time to actually examine the Bible and research it before they shoot their mouths off and say something that is not accurate. Feel free to hit me back with a response.

And my reply:

Lyn,

As you surmised yourself, we aren't spending any time attacking a deity we don't believe in.

But when a majority population of Americans behaves as if a deity exists and has prescribed a particular standard of living, their actions and beliefs have a real and significant effect on all of us. That's what we're spending all this effort fighting. When the legal system and social architecture that govern over all of us is subjected to the massive influence of the religiously-minded majority, much of it succumbs and becomes compliant with (or at least tolerant of) religious dogma, and that scares the hell out of us.

The words attributed to your particular deity have been successfully used to justify atrocious prejudices and to glorify willful ignorance in a time when it is very dangerous to do so.

This is no longer a world in which a small tribe may only have to worry about a land quarrel against another almost indistinguishable small tribe around the corner. It is instead a world in which one high-ranking government official can make a single decision that ultimately results in the destruction of the entire surface of the planet in a matter of minutes.

This society won't do well to live according to outdated and rudimentary ethical codes when thousands of years' refinement have given us much more effective and informative tools. We have to live with a level of responsibility, rationality and maturity that no ethical theistic religion can provide. We're fighting for our wellbeing on the personal scale, and for all our lives on a global scale.

Religion's public influence is an impediment to that goal.

As I reread Lyn's statement, I realize that I just latched onto the first few sentences of it, and that's squarely where I aimed my entire reply.  I think I should go back there and address the remaining content; if anything, I'll have to thank her for her honest inquiry and clearly good-intentioned followup.

* - That's not to say that this level-headedness is atypical of President Obama.  Just atypical of a president.

Virtue, Wisdom and Janitors

Wonderful talk on TED by Barry Schwartz:

Dealing With Death

Not everything atheist/humanist need be serious:

Atheist Women on the Radio

A change is in the air. Minnesota Atheists, the largest and most active atheist organization in the state, as been led by at least one founding member of the board since its creation in 1991. This year, that will not be the case. Jeannette will be serving as associate president, and I will be serving as president.

What does this mean for an organization of nearly 400 supporters? Well, the same activities and programs will continue, but a greater focus on community building, including activities for families and charitable works will inspire a greater number of people to participate.

To highlight these changes, Jeannette was featured on the radio with new board member Crystal. You can download the podcast here.

An evening with Tariq Ramadan

Just back from Tariq Ramadan’s speech in Vancouver this evening.  It was his crowd, an overflow audience of appreciative supporters.

The topic of the lecture was reform in Islam – it was interesting to see exactly what he means by it.  Boiled down, and maybe inadvertently misrepresented, he says that the problem in Islam is a misunderstanding of Islam’s history, caused by an insecure and passive populace.  He said that they misunderstand the origins of Koranic law – that they don’t understand that Islamic law was drafted in a context.  With the decline in the Islamic world, the faith became divorced from the wider society – the context – and became frozen, centuries out of place.

In order for Islam to reconcile itself with the modern world, those “passive” Muslims need to ask their Imam’s harder and more challenging questions, and force Islamic “Science” to work with modern, or real science to put the faith in a more modern context.  Islam, he said, should also strive to change its objectives to encompass democratization, and environmentalism.

What I hadn’t heard before, was his idea of where reform should take place.  First off, the problem of Islam are the passive believers.  The reform of Islam should not have anything to do with them though – other than urging them to ask harder questions.  Reform needs to happen at an elite level between Islamic scholars.

So that was the speech – a few quotes which stuck out for me – written in mostly accurate shorthand:

The problem [of Islam] is not in the source but in the minds of believers

To westerners – the starting point of respect is the remember that Islam is as complex as Christianity

A Muslim which is not evolving is not being faithful to Islamic teachings

To forgive is jihad, isn’t it?

Protecting the collective is a goal of Islam – by definition a nation or society should be independent

Don’t say ‘I’m a good Muslim, a moderate’

Do you think of the Muslims in this society as a richness, an asset to the country, or a problem to be solved?

Following the speech he took 4 questions.  The first was from an Iranian woman who described herself as secular and asked what her place was in a debate between conservatives and reformers.  He responded with some talk about civil society, and then by saying that some ‘religious liberals are politically scary’ as scary as Iran’s theocrats.

The next question was from a Bosniak woman who asked him for his support in calling for Islamic prayers to be given in local languages and not just Arabic.  He didn’t give this support, and went in to a lengthy explanation of why the prayers must be in Arabic, and how she and her fellow Bosniaks are too “passive” and should make more of an effort to learn god’s chosen tongue.

Question three, I’ll come to in a minute.  The last question was about 9-11 and Muslim reaction to it.  He said that he met a Muslim in America in 2003 who wore a button that said ‘proud to be Muslim’ – which he thought was wrong-headed and, frankly pathetic.

Now Question three.  The questioner here asked for his views on apostasy.  He gave the right answer as you can see on the video (sorry for the sloppy camera work):

One thing I want to pull out of there though.  In the video, he brings up an article in Newsweek’s “On Faith” website, by the Egyptian Grand Mufti Ali Goma’a.  Ramadan says that the Mufti unequivocally condemned the death penalty for apostasy.  Ramadan went on to explain that the death penalty was only originally imposed on army deserters – people who converted to Islam to steal military secrets from the Muslims – then repented and went over to the enemy.  It was really a punishment for high treason.

Makes sense, no?

Here’s what Ali Goma’a actually said:

All religions have doctrinal points that define what it is to be an adherent of that religion. These are divine injunctions that form the basis of every religion, but they are not a means for imposing a certain system of belief on others by force. According to Islam, it is not permitted for Muslims to reject their faith, so if a Muslim were to leave Islam and adopt another religion, they would thereby be committing a sin in the eyes of Islam. Religious belief and practice is a personal matter, and society only intervenes when that personal matter becomes public and threatens the well-being of its members.

In some cases, this sin of the individual may also represent a greater break with the commonly held values of a society in an attempt to undermine its foundations or even attack its citizenry. Depending on the circumstances, this may reach the level of a crime of sedition against one’s society. Penalizing this sedition may be at odds with some conceptions of freedom that would go so far as to ensure people the freedom to destroy the society in which they live. This is a freedom that we do not allow since preservation of the society takes precedence over personal freedoms.

That’s not quite as progressive sounding to a Western audience – and maybe good that he didn’t explain the context, lest he lose the crowd.

Sedition, and undermining society are more broadly defined in Egypt than in a place like, say, Iowa or France.  A recent example – Egyptian blogger Kareem Amer:

On November 6, 2006, Amer was again arrested by Egyptian state security officers for posts on his blog that were considered by authorities to be of an irreligious nature … During the hearing, a lawyer in the court room introduced himself as Mohamed Dawoud, and immediately submitted a claim against Kareem for his “incitement to hatred of Islam”. The new claim was added as a new case that Kareem will be held accountable for, even if he were to be acquitted from all the current charges made against him.

The trial was adjourned to February 1, 2007.   Prosecution arguments in the February 1, 2007 session were given by a team of Islamist lawyers who volunteered to serve as the ‘representatives of the people,’ an arrangement allowed under Egyptian law. The government’s state prosecutors, who drew up the legal case against Nabil, were not present.

In a heated exchange during the court session, prosecution lawyers accused Kareem of being an ‘apostate’ and called on judge Ayman al-Akazi to hand Kareem the maximum punishment. As a result, a heated exchange occurred between the prosecution and defence until the judge demanded order.

Kareem defended himself by saying:

“I don’t see what I have done,” he said from the defendant’s cage. “I expressed my opinion…the intention was not anything like these [charges].”

Defence lawyers argued that crimes related to the Internet were new in Egypt and that the penal code did not cover them.

Prosecution lawyer Mohamed Dawoud told The Associated Press:

“I want him [Nabil] to get the toughest punishment,” Dawoud told . “I am on a jihad here … If we leave the likes of him without punishment, it will be like a fire that consumes everything.”

The trial was adjourned to February 22, 2007 where the judge said Nabil was guilty and would serve three years for insulting Islam and inciting sedition, and one year for insulting Mr Mubarak.

To go from gallows to the gulag is certainly better than nothing – but it’s disingenuous to say that’s progress in any western sense of the word.

I’m not going to tell you what to think, but I’d recomment looking at the rest of his speech – at the parables he used to illustrate his Islamic environmentalism, his Islamic economics, his Islamic “science”.  I suspect that behind each of those as well, you will find something equally ugly and anti-modern.

FYI: There’s a lot of background to this that you need to read about to see exactly what I’m getting at – if you do want to do that, I’d recommend starting here.

FYI 2: TP from the Covenant Zone blog was also at the lecture.  He has a post up with a more considered take on the lecture here.

U.S. to Fund Hamas

Click the title for the article.

This is the same old bullshit. Yes. Bullshit. Pump $$ into Gaza for a better tomorrow. Push for a 2 state "solution."

Shame on the Obama Administration for actively promoting this travesty.

One cannot negotiate with terrorists. Let us not forget Obama's own words:

"Israelis must not suffer a threat to their lives, to their schools," he said, adding that "if missiles were falling where my two daughters sleep, I would do everything in order to stop that."
source

My tax dollars will be used to fund Hamas, courtesy of Barak Obama.

Another blogger who is disgusted with this show of weakness, Mere Rhetoric:

US Pledges $1B Stimulus Package for... Gaza

From Haaretz, and quoted on Mere Rhetoric:

"The United States plans to pledge more than $900 million to help rebuild Gaza after Israel's offensive against Hamas and strengthen the Palestinian Authority, a U.S. official said on Monday. The money will be channeled through UN and other bodies and will not be distributed via the militant group Hamas, which rules Gaza, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton plans to make the announcement next week at a Gaza donors conference in Egypt. The March 2 donors conference in Sharm el-Sheikh resort aims to raise humanitarian and rebuilding funds for Gaza after Israel's offensive against Hamas at the end of last year. About 1,300 Palestinians were killed during the campaign, according to Gaza officials, as were 13 Israelis"

No one ever talks about why Palestinian civilians were killed in the first place. Certainly, Gaza is densely populated. However, Hamas scum used adults and children as human shields, tortured and murdered members of Fatah and anyone else suspect of aiding Israel. Munitions of Hamas were hid in both school and hospital alike. What about the Palestinians killed after the war because they were denied food and medical supplies by Hamas who stole the aid for its own ends?

Hamas is a terrorist organization. It's fanatical followers murder Palestinian and Jew alike, and Obama's Administration is now giving aid and comfort to the enemy of Israel.

I am proud to say that I did not vote for this current president.

The End of the Tunnel

When in a slump, it is nice to compile a list of things that make the light at the end of the tunnel. Here’s a few things I’m looking forward to: The finale of Battlestar Galactica. With mixed emotions, of course - finale means no more. But I think it’ll be worth it. Watchmen, the movie. I’m [...]

Tariq Ramadan in Vancouver tonight

[Please see: 'An evening with Tariq Ramadan', posted after the event.]

Tariq Ramadan will be speaking at SFU’s downtown campus on Granville Street tonight (Monday) at 7pm.  I think I have a reservation for this. I booked on-line, but never got a confirmation.   Here’s how SFU presents Ramadan:

Swiss Muslim intellectual and renowned Islamic reformer, Tariq Ramadan, will outline his views Feb. 23 during a lecture at SFU’s Vancouver campus entitled The Scope and Limits of Reforming Islam.  Ramadan, who teaches Islamic studies at Oxford, is a leading advocate for a revitalized Islam in the West. His recent book, Radical Reform: Islamic Ethics and Liberation, proposes an approach that integrates both spiritual and ethical objectives for contemporary Muslims, enabling them to more fully participate in the civic life of secular western countries.

SFU goes on to mention that he’s a little controversial.  And here’s why:

The grandson of Hassan al Banna, the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Ramadan is a senior research fellow at St Anthony’s College, Oxford, and president of the think tank European Muslim Network.

As such, he is often spoken of as a leading Muslim intellectual, a reformist who is able to move between the academic circuit, the clerical establishment (he’s been an ardent defender of the reactionary Sunni scholar Yusuf al-Qaradawi) and the wider Muslim population with equal felicity.

But so far the size of his reputation comfortably outstrips the strength of his ideas. There are plenty of people who know who Ramadan is, but far fewer who know what he actually stands for.

And of those that do think they know, some believe that Ramadan tailors his message to different audiences – secular and Muslim – to such an extent that it amounts to deception.

n one case he argues for a modernised Islam, in the other for an Islamised modernity.

So, if my reservation is sorted, then I’ll be going and putting up a post later tonight.  If my reservation is not sorted, I’ll be whining about SFU later tonight as well.  If you’re in the city, try and crash it – it’ll be entertaining.

Losing Religion

Another pictorial trip through religion, from paleolithic cave art to fundamentalist restrictions.

I love the name of this song - such a lovely sentiment - eschew delusional sentiment, embrace rationality.

"Rapid Eye Movement"

Higher quality.

Gregorian

Higher quality.

This version of the song, by Gregorian, is my second choice. WMG, aka Warner Mega Greed has forced YT to strip all its music from already uploaded videos, or to prevent upload of WMG music. Not a particularly wise choice on their part - they are losing an enormous amount of advertising exposure. I'd like to see tubers make WMG pay for their greed by boycotting their products.

Atheists don’t do charity, apparantly

How volunteering can stave off depression

Don't waste money on expensive therapy, give up your time for someone else

Julie Burchill reckons that athesists are too busy being intellectual to help anyone.

Those wonderful atheists are obviously too busy doing something intellectual to be bothered with helping others.

She also believes that depression is on the rise because:
a. People are less religious than before
b. People do less voluntary work than before
the Christian presence has stayed constant as middle-aged women have been tempted into more self-regarding activities. And as this has happened, their levels of depression have risen, because religious faith and voluntary work are the twin tried-and-tested pillars of happiness.

If you feel the self absorbed La Burchill needs correcting you might leave a comment on the article at the Times website, linked above.

Test

This is a test. My last post shows up in the "view post" setting, but not in the "View Blog" setting.

Weird.

Community Activism

Poor old YouTube – driven by profit, presumably hiring expensive software engineers, but the cheapest administrative staff that they can find.

The result of this is that some of the YT user community is brighter than the YT staff. (Not I – the video makers on the big science channels.) These tubers are much, much brighter than the majority of creationists and religionists who are using YT as a forum for their illogic, misinformation, and dirty tactics.

In lieu of good arguments, creationists and religionists have been forced to resort to cheating. The votebot is their latest tactic in the war on anyone with the temerity to disagree with them. Honest voting does not interest them. Oh no, they need to use computers to cheat down the ratings of those who are armed with knowledge and logic.

One of the interesting aspects of this ongoing battle between rationality (evolution, atheism) and petty-minded delusion (creationism, bigotry, hate-speech, religionism) has evolved (I love that word) since the attack of the bot-slaves. (Forgive the machines, Lord, they know not what they do).

Creationist and religionist foolishness and malevolence – and now YouTube ineptitude – has forced grass roots activism and community organization.

It's like watching a sociology experiment.

Atheists and scientists tend to be an independent-minded lot, who have naively assumed that providing factual information would be sufficient to help the ignorant to learn the truth. Belatedly, atheists and scientist are realizing that they must co-ordinate their efforts and take a political stand against the Forces of Darkness and Ignorance.

Acting rather like the Bush administration, YouTube has turned a blind eye to hate speech, while acting as dupes to petty-minded, religionist flagging of mild content, and to malicious, false DMCA claims.

YouTube apparently regards tubers as pests, who are best ignored and avoided. This is particularly so when tubers have complaints about YouTube’s failures to provide service in accord with their own guidelines.

Like any greed-bloated corporation, YouTube has focussed on advertising revenues while ignoring the fact that its very survival actually depends upon uploaded videos. Our uploaded videos. Our creations. Videos, which remain on our computers. Videos that we can delete from YouTube and upload onto an alternative site. In other words, we are both the fans and the producers. Boycotts work well, emigration would be even more effective.

YouTube would be well advised to remember not to cut off the hands that grow the food.
