How Small We Are

I find one of the most arrogant claims that religion makes is that we are somehow special – the “centre of the universe”, so to speak. While (most) religions have rejected the idea that the earth is the centre of our solar system, the very idea that the creator of the universe would single out one small planet in some distant corner of his creation to be “special” seems absurdly arrogant. Carl Sagan describes this arrogance as “our imagined self-importance”, and “the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe”. While I think Sagan’s description still remains the greatest demonstration of how insignificant we really are (with Monty Python coming a close second), I saw this picture just recently which I though demonstrated it quite well too:

The Planets

I’m sure anyone who visits this site has already seen Carl Sagan’s “Pale Blue Dot”, but I’m going to post it here again anyway, because it always manages to put me in my place each time I watch it.

Can anyone honestly say that “God” created all of this just for us?

Talk Like a Physicist Day

Who knew?

Today is Talk Like a Physicist Day.

It's also Einstein's Birthday

Oh! and International Pi Day.

Enjoy!

Right, I'm off to go do some physicsy things, like sending streams of electrons through cyberspace.

Bad things/Good people when all else fails explanation

When free will fails to explain unpleasant events and evils, another popular explanation arises. “We (humans) are unable to know and understand god, therefore trying to understand certain circumstances is pointless.” this argument is delivered in many shapes and sizes, but no matter the shape, results in the destruction of monotheistic mythology. Such an argument reduces a believer to an agnostic (the impossibility of acquiring the necessary knowledge to answer certain questions), because religion teaches us how to understand god. He (not her) has anthropomorphic characteristics, emotions, and a rulebook on how his creations are to conduct their lives. If that is not enough information on how to understand god, what about a history spanning thousands of years on how he reacts to those very same rules he provided (Koran, Bible, Torah)? The point is, believers claim to understand god, but when things get rough claim it impossible to do so. At best this is a discussion stopper and accomplishes nothing. When we do not understand something fill the gap with God instead of honest inquiry and then when we find a contradiction to that very same established truth, claim that god cannot be understood. Which is it? Do we know and understand god, as dogma lays out for us, even if the concept fails to stand up to logic and reason? Or should religion be brought down from the look with your eyes and not with your hands shelf of truth and be reduced to the friendly world of speculation? Although this claim in itself can be extensive the purpose of this piece is to supplement the previous discussion with an additional perspective plus bridge the gap to future articles concerning modern hybrid concepts of religion and gods, specifically how individuals create personalized gods loosely based on traditional dogmas, yet still label themselves as Christians Muslims and or Jews.

Happy Friday!

TZIF! Thank Zeus it's Friday! If christians can thank a mythical god for good things that happen and things that are inevitable (like Fridays), why can't do the same?

I think the christian god has had exclusive rights to Fridays for too long! It's time to dethrone him! So before some christian can recite their tag line, why not throw them a curve ball by thanking some other mythical character? I find it really freaks them out and often prompts some very interesting conversations...

Happy Friday, everyone!

This Is What Happens When Monkeys Have Bum Sex With a Retarded Fish-Frog

I was reading this cute little article on the ten reasons why women convert to Islam, and almost made it through the tenth without breaking out into laughter...almost...

10. Islam has unconfined Women and has given them the human right to reach for the sky. There have been Muslim Women Presidents through out the centuries, but to this date, the oppressive mentality of the men in the Western U.S.A. has stopped any Women from becoming Presidents in predominately Christian countries, while the Muslim countries have voted for and elected Female Presidents.

Apologists have to begin to realize that regardless of what these millenia(s) old books say in relation to one another, the modern day practices and interpretations differ greatly from the actual, literal readings. If everyone read and believed these books to be 100% literal in every sense of the word, the world be a radically different place.

Leviticus 21:17-36 outlines how the church cannot allow a deformed person to worship yahweh with the others. is that practiced nowadays? No! Even the most literal, fundamentalist nutjobs don't kick people out who cannot walk, or need classes, or are infertile, etc.

Religions everywhere have evolved into ugly retarded fish-frog versions of themselves, and to compare what one said 1500 years ago to what the other said 1500 years ago is NOT a comparision of the religion at all.

Oh ya: Islam totally disrespects bitches, yo. Oh sorry, I didn't mean to drive-by shoot the thesis' premise.

Catholics 2.0!

So, I figured it was about time to get off my ass and get back to blogging. I had a nice little rough patch this month with school, but now I have time to get back to what matters: the sin overhaul.

I have to say, I think the Pope has made a few nice little revisions, and I'm now an even bigger sinner than before:

1 - Genetic Modification
So...if we have the ability to alter a child's genetics to he/she doesn't come out with Down's Syndrome, we shouldn't use it? God created us in his image right? I'm assuming god doesn't have Down's, so I don't see the theological problem here...
2 - Experimentation on Humans
So, we're not allowed to perform a single act that's "morally debatable"? Well shit; it's not like abortions, anti-psychotics, anti-depressants, aspirin, pain killers, Viagra, psychological studies, nano-technology, etc has or ever will help anyone, right?
3 - Polluting
We totally needed god to tell us this. Stfu Al Gore. Besides, if god really liked the environment, he'd go out into the forest and live in a log!

4 - Social injustice
5 - Causing Poverty
6 - Financial Gluttony
Okay, so here's where I think the Pope is endorsing something really, really funny, because if we his take his word for what the fuck is good in this world, look at all the iconoclastic things we can justify:

It's now well known that major music distributors do not end up dolling our royalty payments. So, buying from these corporations is really just supporting Financial Gluttony, and just plain not taking a stand for a great social injustice! Moreover, these gaint corporations inflate the costs of CDs and DVDs to such ridiculous amounts that audiophiles are chased into poverty - see: STARVING STUDENTS!

Therefore, downloading music and movies off of the internet illegally is not only morally justified, but doing otherwise is sending you to hell! Quickly, download µTorrent, hit up Torrentz, and start saving your soul!

7 - Taking Drugs
So, I'm on Seroquel XR to help deal with a Panic Disorder and Agorophobia, and I'm going to hell for it? You're right, Pope, I should just sit back and enjoy the way god made me: fucking crazy.

It's good to know that the Pope is still spewing out proverbial fuck-yous.

A Malignant Runaway Process

Yesterday's comic over at Goats had a quality description of religion that I felt it necessary to share:

Religion is a malignant runaway process, stealing cognitive system resources and filling the empty spaces with fear, uncertainty and doubt.

Cheers,

Why why why why why would anyone ever say, "there is this thing called '___[insert anything here]____' that you are ignorant of, and I forbid you to educate yourself on the matter. Here is a tree that grows this knowledge just in case you're the rule-breaker I made you to be."

Seriously, was God not sure if they would choose ignorance over information? Is it possible that he could create a being that could be self-aware, but desire to do nothing about it?

Here I am happy and safe. God tells me that if I break a rule, I will learn about something new, but I will be punished. My first thought is, "what is it like to be punished?"

How do I, as a human being, learn?

The only conclusion I can come to here is that God doesn't know what he's doing. Or maybe it was the man who created God that didn't understand what he was talking about. I gotta go with occam's raisins on this one. Either way, I look good, so whatever.
